Is a cover letter always necessary?

Question--When one is required to fill out an application for YAP's, competitions, summer programs, etc., is a cover letter also necessary? I understand some places specifically request cover letters to be included with headshot/resume, but if they don't clearly state the need for one, does one's paper application replace the need for a cover letter? Thanks!

I mean, it can't hurt, right?

I guess that depends on what you write.

To Whome IT May Concern:

I am writing you because I am the Next Pavarotti.  All my friends say so, and at the church I sing at. I sing in many operatic numbers such as Nessun Dorma and In Questa Reggia.  Many people request my singing for birthday parties and operas in my hometown.  I have been personally told of my talents by those who are in the business such as Pavarotti and Carlos Santana's brother.

In closing, I request to process my application enclosed and an audition time so I may show you my talents.  If you prefer you may go to my web page and listen to my sound clips from my upcoming album, "Son of Pavarotti."  You may order it from my web order service at http://www.sonofpavarotti.cz if you so desire.

Also please find reference letters from my close friend and voice teacher, Donna Nessuno, who has told me to write to you and ask you for a position singing in one or many of your operas.

Your Humble Servant,

Sbaglio Schiffone

Actually, I was thinking of something to the effect of...

"Dear Mr. Pavarotti,

Enclosed please find my application materials/headshot/resume'/etc.. If you have any further questions please contact me by phone at (000) 555-1212 or via e-mail at primadonnaassoluta@website.com. I look forward to working with you soon.

Sincerely,

Joan Sutherland"

If it's done along those lines, I figure it can't be a BAD thing to do this. If so, do tell me how!

It just looks more professional

I think everyone we send resumes to has the sense to know that we want an audition, but it looks better when there's a cover letter. It doesn't have to be a big deal, but it is a good place to name-drop or mention that you were referred by Meistro Sine Nomine.

Love the cover letter ideas! Thanks for the suggestions--I figured a cover letter can't hurt, but just wanted some other opinions. Thanks again!

Question...

September 10 2003, 4:19 PM

Do you think it's ok to request a specific time of day for your audition in the cover letter? For example...

"If at all possible I would like to request an early afternoon or evening time to audition."

This is for YAP's. I'm trying to get audition times that will cause the least amount of conflict with my job, since they are NOT cool with my singing here...

Opinions???

I have done this

In answer to your question, I have requested certain audition times or places in my cover letters, and have not had a problem. If auditioners can't accomodate you, I'm sure they will let you know--but it doesn't hurt to ask! You phrased your request very nicely, and asking politely always goes a long way! Good luck with your auditions!
