Sorry my answer was so short last night after your post. I've been having a very hard time the past several days, I also have sleep apnea and have a broken cpap machine, so like you I can sleep most of the day. My cataplexy is much worse when I'm fatigued and my fingers don't work well on the computer, needless to say my brain is asleep.
Pat always writes so eloquently what most of us think and feel. You are in a wonderful place to have John Hopkins in your back yard. It's not easy finding a sleep specialist, and when you do, most aren't what they say they are.(my experience). I've been through many from pulmonologists to neurologists. I wish there were a narcoleptic sleep specialist out there somewhere, I would travel the entire US to make an appointment. I am surprised that your doc didn't at least consider sleep apnea and set you up for a sleep study. My favorite joke is "What do you call a doctor who graduated from the bottom of his class?" A DOCTOR. I think most physicians fit into this catagory.
I was just wondering how old you are? Most of us have gone decades before being dx and this is so unacceptable. We are seeing a few in their teens and twenties being dx. I give kudos to their doctors. They were lucky enough to get a doc who maybe graduated from the top of his class or at least knew someone with narcolepsy.
Please keep in touch and let us know how your appointment goes. Like Pat said, insist on your results from your sleep study, keep a daily journal of your sleep habits, HH, sleep paralysis, cataplexy, and automatic behavior (if you can remember). Take charge of your health care, don't let them put you off.
