I tried all of the traditional Narc meds, even provigil which only helped for a short period, I didnt like taking so many meds and I switched doctors, who put me on a strict diet...no sweets, pop, and he told me peanut butter and turkey can only be eaten at night, because it had the same thing in it that turkey contains that makes you sleepy, also I must avoid apples!
I was put on Xyrem, I have severe Narcolepsy and Sleep Apnea, XYREM IS A GOD SEND...NO LIE...Its not hard to get up for a second dose (which is needed because it is short acting) and I have NO SIDE EFFECTS...and its titrated in increments..so they start at the lowest dose, until they find you majic number that works best for you....its got a salty taste, but you adjust to it, and you you hate the taste , you can mix it with Crystal lite or sugar free Kool Aid only.
I have so much energy and I still have my bad days..but they are few and far between, I rarely take afternoon naps now, and I did 10 miles on my bike with my Honey, we did 30 last year, and after passing out 2 times in 5 minutes I rode home under my own power..like nothing happened, and after a battery of test, I was surpised they wanted to do a sleep study....I had 2 in a period of 3 months....the first center did diagnos me with Narcolepsy....then I was sent to a doctor who didnt have time to answer questions and admitted he was so busy that he limited time with each patient, so I went in search of another doctor and struck GOLD.
Not only did I have Narcolespy (1st doctor said Moderate my new doc said SEVERE), I was awaken during the study to put on a CPAP becaue I quit breathing about 33 times an hour on average! I could not sleep hardly at all with the 1st doc's study..so they totally missed the Apnea.
Please dont be afraid of the Xyrem...I WAS AT FIRST...Taken as directed YOU WILL HAVE A NEW LIFE FULL OF ENERGY AND WAKEFULNESS..I am so glad to have found such a good doctor...listen to your instincts about your treatment....be vocal and ask questions...my own DOCTOR SAID THAT SOME SLEEP SPECIALIST ARE LOOKING FOR PROFITS..and not their patients best intrest.
Xyrem is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE...AT FIRST ,MY ONE MONTH BOTTLE WAS $834.00, AND TO MY SHOCK, WITH THE INCREASE IN DOSAGE IT IS NOW $1,134...My insurace cover most of the tab, so I only pay $30.00 in co-pay per month...Xyrem has a new plan for people who cant afford the meds...so call them and ask questions.
You wont be going to pick up your Xyrem Prescription at you local pharmacy..IT WILL COME TO YOU...no pharmacy carries it..Why..because there in only 1 central pharmacy..its a controlled substance..(the Government runs it)...and they contact you to tell you when its time to re-order, and you make they payments via the pharmacy also..youwill have your own nurse who contacts you every month to see how you are doing, and you may call him or her at anytime.
