One thing some people may not be doing before their sleep study is that they have to be off all their meds for two weeks prior to it. That is something that may not have been made clear.
Also, you are right that the overnight and the MSLT have to be doing at the same appointment because the other sleep disorders have to be ruled out in the first place (apnea, insomnia, etc.).
What I have a hard time with is someone being able to subconsciously change their sleep stages due to stress. I just don't think that is possible. That is the whole reason we have narcolepsy. If we got all the correct sleep stages, all of our symptoms would go away.
Someone with IH is different because they sleep soundly and still need more and more sleep. There sleep stages are normal, 1.2.3.4. People with N do not get enough or any 1, 2, or 3. That is why IH may be even more complicated than N because there is just no reason showing for the symptoms. There may be some kind of test that isn't even created yet that shows the reasons for IH patients. Like several years ago before they had the MSLT, there was no reason for narcolepsy.
