Maybe I can help?

Hi,

I'm also 17 years old, and I've been experiencing symptoms of Cataplexy/mild EDS since I was 15.
My family and I are also struggling with life choices....The ones that apply to 'normal' kids in their late teens no longer apply to us.

No, I probably won't be able to drive a car. I'm fortunate to live in an area where public transportation is readily available. I can't go swimming without being VERY prepared.
My attacks have greatly impacted school. Right now I'm over a year behind. But I look at it this way.
When I graduate, I'll graduate knowing I wasn't able to skate through, and I'll be that much more proud of myself.

Technically, he can get any job that doesn't risk his safety or the safety of others. Employers can't discriminate because of his medical condition, and hopefully they will work with him and allow him to take a nap at work if needed.

Here's a link to the American's with Disability Act-Disability Discrimination.
It gives information for you and him to go over when he starts looking for a job.

Don't think that this is going to be easy...
But also know that you CAN get through it.
Be as supportive as possible for your son.

I have bad days. I have days when I feel like I will never be able to beat this. But with support I can get out of the funk and get back on track.
It's all about mindset.

I do hope this helps you.
And also, please email me. I have a site that your son might like for support. It's a chat type site for teens dealing with chronic or serious illnesses, and yes, Narcolepsy does count.

Here's my email: brianna(dot)naslund(at)gmail(dot)com

I hope to hear from you.
