Many people think of dieting as something that is done on a short term basis through a restrictive intake of food, but the word diet actually means 'way of living'. In other words, what do you eat to sustain yourself? Some people have a bad diet and some people have a good diet. Too many people go on a 'diet', lose weight, and then go back to eating as they did prior to 'dieting' and gain back the weight they loss. The key to weight loss is finding the amount that should be eaten.

-Find the suggested caloric intake for yourself (sex, age, weight, height, body type)and use that as a guide. You would be surprised how many people actually over-eat. Once you are accustomed to this intake, lower it by 10%, once you are acccustomed to that intake lower another 10%.

-Make a list of the daily intake of sodium, sugars, etc. and use the info printed on products to regulate the amounts you eat.

-A report came out recently that exercise is not the key to wieght loss but what a person eats. This does not mean exercise is bad but the bottom line is our food intake. Walking is the best exercise. It is easy, enjoyable, free (but by a good quality shoe), and most importantly the most effective. Most people who start walking on a daily basis continue whereas people who go gun ho at a gym will eventually lose interest.

I have found not eating after 4 hours before going to bed is a big help. I have also found -

-Vegetables, vegetables, AND vegetables (frozen or fresh)...plus some fruit. Forget the canned stuff, too much sodium. Watch out for juice drinks- too much sugar.

-Milk is a key to losing pounds. The calcium, vitamin D, play a role in the process. Drinking a glass of milk a few minutes before eating a meal is great.

-The amount of food in your mouth should allow you to talk to someone clearly, if you can't talk clearly you have too much food in your mouth. Chew slowly and 'thoughtfully' until there is nothing left in your mouth and follow with a sip of water.

-Salads are great but the dressings are a killer. Buy salad dressings that come in a spray bottle (spritzers). You will be amazed at how much flavor you get with such a small amount. Say good bye to Ranch, Bleu Chesse, Thousand Island FOR right now.

-Alcohol is a fat person's enemy if consumed on a daily basis.
