I agree with pointing out weaknesses in the design through random vibration testing. Although forces applied while testing aren't necessarily seen in the field, these forces help to point out potential weak spots.
What is a good profile to use for this type of exploratory testing? Presently, we use MIL-STD 810, Vibration, Category 24. This excites a random profile over 20-2000Hz; 20-1000Hz is flat and 1000-2000Hz ramps at -6dB/Oct; G-rms = 7.698. Maybe it is good to start with this freq band and increase the Acceleration Spectra to the limit above, but where does this profile come from and what is good to use for our products (I work with Steve).
If we know some of the environment where our units get installed, don't we want to test to those environments as well. Yes, we have installations at fixed locations such as homes and buildings, but we never really know where our fixtures will go. We have installations at the following: CN Tower in Toronto, Canada, London Eye (observation wheel) in London, LAX airport, various suspension bridges, and skyscrapers. How do we test to cover "all" locations and how aggressive should we be?
