Doesn't have to be "mandatory." Just cut kids who don't show up.

I think most HS coaches try to accomodate the kids' club commitments within reason, letting them go for college showcases and whatnot. The more responsible clubs return the courtesy.

But this was an indefensible move on the part of the involved clubs. It goes beyond screwing the high schools . . . it's simply not good for the kids.
