Response to Glenn Hoddle said on Tuesday that the 4-4-2 system is outdated in international football

No-one has been playing 4-4-2 for a century - it wasn't invented till the early 70s. There have been many soccer systems over the years. In the 50s the prevalent system was called WM. The Brazilians invented 4-2-4 in the early 60s. Alf Ramsey invented 4-3-3 in the mid 60s and 4-4-2 evolved from that. England's problem was lack of talent, particularly in central midifeld, not the system they were playing. My personal opinion is that if they had taken Carrick and played a system similar to Manchester City with Carrick and Parker as the holders, Gerrard on the right, they would still be in the tournament, till tomorrow at least.
