Yes that's true, there is a bit of imbalance in the distribution of games, but again.. A large piece ofthat is due to attrition and a lack of numbers.. 350 referees sounds like a lot, but on Varisty game there are a LOT of games.. Even at 75 games on one night, that's 225 referees needed and that's a lowball estimate. Additionally, we're not all available every night of every week of the season. Put some more bodies in front of the assignor and they'll be able to spread out the workload. The fact is there are guys who have more time/self employed/retired and are able to have a more flexible schedule, and so until more people register, the bigger the pool of available officials.
Best way to encourage this? Lay off the referees in club soccer. That's where the next generation of referees is coming from, and that's where we absolutely lose most referees from abuse. The "good college referees" are from the same pool that HS officials come, they're just smaller in number. It's going to be very difficult to get away from a "good old boy" system without injecting new life into the pool of officials.
