Motortrend publishes an annual December SUV of the year comparison issue. To compete, an SUV must be a new model or significantly redesigned and be out in the market by Jan 03.
This year, Honda will compete with its' two offerings, the Pilot and the Element. Other notables are Lexus' GX 470, Range Rover from Land Rover, Hummer's H2, Volvo's 7 seater XC90, Isuzu's Ascender, Kia's Sorento, saturn's Vue and some others. Redesigned players that i know of are the Expedition, Forester and Navigator.
From what I've read so far, the Ascender is the closest match to the Pilot. Based on GM's Envoy/Trailblazer, it Has 275-285 hp, has room for seven and priced in the late $20K.
past winners are the Xterra (what did it compete with?), MDX beating X5 and last year's Envoy slamming two MB models.
