Ok, it now seems firm that the Pilot will have the same sort of perforated (i.e., holey) leather as the MDX. Before I cancel my order and change to cloth (and go after-market leather), can someone give me some good reasons to stick with Honda's leather?
I just picture that perforated leather is not family-friendy (I can just see little crumbs wedged in the holes...sticky Powerade seeping into the seat cushion, etc., etc.) I want an easy-wipe surface, and was so looking forward to leather.
Does anyone like perforated leather? And, if so, why?
Thanks....
Diane

honda's factory leather seats arent even full leather. only the parts that touch your body are leather the rest is vinyl. definitely go aftermarket where you'll get 100% of the seat is leather. plus you can get 2-tone

I have a friend who works for a major auto manufacturer and he tells me that almost all leather seats even in Caddy's and Lincolns are the same way. They do this for durability and cost. By the way I talked to a couple of seat shops and they both had the same opinion of heated leather seat. Beats up the leather. Have you seen any aftermarket leather for the Pilot? If so where and how much? I really like the leather in my '98 Accord and I would not mind it in the Pilot. Thanks

If you want talked out of leather Go look at any 5 year old Caddy that has been used by the average consumer and check out the drivers seat. They all look like they have been in a delivery truck. As far as food in the car my 3 year old eats certain things in the car, but let me tell you dumping a glass of iced tea on the carpet is way worse. Stanley steamer cleaned the carpet for $40.00 (thank goodness)

No respectable aftermarket leather installer will touch a car that has side impact airbags that expel from the seats. If you have it done, and they are not absolute experts at installing over the airbags, they may not function in a crash. Even worse, they could explode into your back which would easily kill you. And it would leave the installer open to many $$$ in liability.
IMHO, don't do it. It's not worth the risk.

Just curious because I have found no aftermarket installers who are overly concerned.
The side airbags I have seen use a exposed opening and do not go through the covers.
Several dealers are putting "aftermarket" leather on CR-Vs and other cars.

My father bought a Toyota Sequoia, took it to an aftermarket leather installer and he refused to do it. He showed us a report of a study that showed modifications to seats (leather upgrades, reupholstery, even some installations of LCD in headrests with the wires running too close to the airbag) could cause it to deflect in the wrong direction.
I tend to trust the guy becuase he lost the $1500 job instead of doing what made him the money.
Of course most manufacturers and installers are going to tell you it is safe. They want the money.
OEM side impact airbags are TESTED on the seat in the car that they were designed for. Unless the aftermarket setup has been TESTED on that specific seat, in that specific vehicle, you don't know and they don't know what will happen.
I'm not trying to be a pain or argumentative. I'm more concerned about your safety. I would hate to see someone hurt because of a simple leather upgrade. No airbags in the seat, go for it!
BTW, my mother has an MDX and the leather is the same used in the Pilot. It's OK. I would much prefer the leather (unperfed) that is used in the Ody.
