Robert Culp Sues L.A. Zoo,
Alleging Elephant Abuse
LOS ANGELES (CN) – Los Angeles Zoo has abused and injured its elephants so severely that nearly half of them died, Robert Culp claims in Superior Court. Culp, the actor, also sues Zoo Director John Lewis, claiming that “all of this suffering, death and loss of elephants was followed each time by the costly purchase and transport of still more elephants, resulting in even more damage to and loss of ‘City property,’ ultimately resulting in great collective expense and waste to City taxpayers,” in violation of state law. Despite these alleged outrages, the L.A. City Council voted in 2006 to spend $40 million more on the zoo’s elephant exhibit, adding only half an acre to the elephant compound while adding more structures to it. ”Nothing proposed will add enough space, correct the dangerous conditions … (or) prevent further illegal, cruel or abusive treatment of the elephants,” Culp claims. The complaint describes the alleged abuses and premature deaths of 13 elephants. Culp wants the expansion enjoined and the zoo ordered to treat its elephants better. He is represented by Wasserman, Comden & Casselman.
