Hi Jonathan,
So nice to know you are still out there.
Ummm ...

- I have a couple of comments about the "lovely" little fanfic you just recommended. I certainly admire the writer's skill and thank you for finding the story for us ... BUT any story that knocks TATIA off in first few lines is "not" going to be on my Top Ten favorites list.
Now we all know that Kelly is never going to be chosen the poster boy or stalwart leader of the "long-term emotional relationship league" ... but give a girl a break - couldn't he have mourned and experienced some deep pangs of remorse for his lost love, Tatia, a bit LONGER than part of a "day" and several rounds of sake!!
This story hit me like "Snow White and Sleeping Beauty" meet "Clockwork Orange" ....
one really hot kiss and Kelly's "so sad sake-sodden libido and heart" is re-awakened and totally back on track. (Can't wait to see what Disney would do with a version like this ...

).
O.K. so I didn't quite find the story came across as much "a remarkably sweet little I Spy fanfic" as you did! But, I am glad that the writer cared enough about I SPY to create her story.
I don't always care very much for I SPY fan fic stories ... I totally respect the different writers' talents - and their creativity and inventiveness - and admire their love of I SPY which motivated them enough to write their stories ...
BUT (yes, you knew a but was coming) ... the fanfic stories I've read often add major new characters (usually family members like children or spouses) that don't fit for me - OR - they go off on bizarre tangents and put our guys in unrealistic situations that just don't feel right - OR - they have Kelly & Scotty act (or react) totally out of character, at least in my view ... and as Jonathan charmingly noted, many of the fanfic stories out there are not about the adventures of Scotty
and Kelly, but about the adventures of Scotty
with Kelly. Not quite how I care to picture them, but each to their own ... "Caveat emptor - Buyer Beware"!
I even have problems with John Tiger's (Walter Wager's) "I SPY" books for many of the same reasons.
BUT there is one fanfic that I do highly recommend .... it is very, very well done.
It's called "Prelude to the Hunt" and is by "Aunty Alta" ... who we really miss around here on the FORUM. This was written a few years ago ... and it is an excellent "prequel" to "Home to Judgment." She really captured the flavor of Culp's story and the nuances of the characters perfectly - and she answered many of the unanswered questions posed in "Home to Judgment" --- how did they end up in this predicament, who are the bad guys and what do they want, and exactly what happened to Scotty and Kelly before we see them in the opening scene running for their lives towards the refuge of the idyllic farm of Aunty Alta and Uncle Harry.

This story can be found on Jason's great I SPY site - which is amazingly is still up, though he has added nothing since 2003.
