Catching up on my spy education, I’ve been working my way through the half dozen or so James Bond films starring Roger Moore. I’m frankly at a loss to understand why Moore is so maligned by hard-core Bond fans.

Good for you B-L .... education is always a good thing!

I think much of the to-do about the different Bonds (besides the factor of loyalty and not warming to the idea of seeing your favorite characters re-embodied), is that Roger Moore brought a very different style to his Bond than Sean Connery. Connery played Bond straight - with quips and panache mixed in - but essentially as a serious character.

Moore brought a far-lighter touch to his Bond - a more humorous "don't take this all so seriously" approach that many Connery die-hards didn't warm to -- then!!

Apples and oranges - both were great - sophisticated and polished, shaken and not stirred!! And as you said this is "ancient history," with all the newer re-incarnations of Bond that have happened since then.

I also think, like successive Captains on STAR TREK, you often associate - and are loyal to - the one you grew up with. Picard and Sisko were their own men and excellent in their roles, as were the other Captains - but for me, it will always be Captain James T. Kirk and his Enterprise crew.

Each to his own - the spice of life!!

And check out this Cinemaretro (Celebrating Films of the 60s and 70s) link, if you are not familiar with it. It is an interesting, eclectic website -- part gossip, part excellent in-depth movie analyses and discussions - and always a wide-ranging assortment of stories.

Right now, among other current articles, is one titled "WRITER ANTHONY HOROWTIZ ANALYZES THE LEGACY OF JAMES BOND" and there is also info and photos on Daniel Craig's new Bond movie "Quantum of Solace."

.... and a search for "Roger Moore" on Cinemaretro yielded this page with lots and lots of articles and photos, including one cute one of his being aghast at his 80th birthday cake.

Enjoy!!

Thanks again for a great posting - and we look forward to your Annual Bulwer-Lytton I SPY Quiz.

As always,
