Hi again,
I have no idea why finding out more about this hotel was so fascinating, but I found myself looking it up again this morning.
And BINGO, I ran across a few more photos. Yep, this has got to be the place - the old Guadalajara Hilton.
Guadalajara Hilton THEN - (I SPY days)
Mision Carlton Guadalajara - NOW
Russ had written ...
"I wonder if the hotel that functioned as the Guadalajara Hilton in 1967 is STILL the Guadalajara Hilton? That's something that us I SPY buffs should get around to investigating. We need to make a master list and explore the current status of the hotels where Kelly and Scotty stayed, so that if we ever have the financial wherewithall to follow in their footsteps, we can stay at the "right" (i.e., correct) place."
Might want to rethink that plan of action, Mr. Conway, sir ......
Here's the address of the hotel, if you are interested - Av. Niños Héroes 125 Col Centro, Guadalajara - and it is listed as being near the historical center of the city, but also from one person's review, it is "located in the auto dealership area of town with a Super Walmart across the street -- No restaurants visible in the area within walking distance. No sightseeing in the area nor anywhere to walk for leisure outside of the hotel."
To be fair, the advertising photos looked nice, and some of the more current reviews I read sounded OK, but the Mision Carlton appears to be a 2 star hotel. And the reviews on the TripAdvisor site, covering the past few years, were universally NOT overly complimentary with lovely comments like --- "Did not have toilet seat! - And when someone came to see about it they asked me if it was EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO HAVE ONE!!!!!!! " or this one "Do not STAY here - room with 1. stained carpet 2. air smelling like a sewage 3. hair all over the unwashed bedsheet 4. torn comforter 5. bed bugs. We moved to three different rooms within the first hour and were hesitant to move again, because each of the room had an unique problem of its own."
So you might want to stay at the NEW Guadalajara Hilton if you get down there and just go visit the OLD one for a "photo-op" - and wear gloves when you get there.
All my best,
Tatia
