The War Lord ... Location Audio

As a change of pace, for my roughly bi-weekly audio posting, instead of another Elayne Carroll/Robert Culp adaptation of classic theater, I'm going to post one of the I Spy location audio tapes complete. I acquired these tapes a few years ago and described them here (the MediaMax link at the end no longer exists):

In fact, I think I'll alternate classic theater with location audio until I get through all of my holdings, or run out of space on my free 4shared account.

The earliest chronologically of the location audio tapes is the single tape from The War Lord from 14 November 1966 which you can listen to via the link below. Almost all the tapes I obtained were from a few Greek episodes from the spring and summer of 1967. The War Lord tape is kind of an outlier. The person I got the tapes from didn't know anything about who saved them or why. They were apparently left behind in a house or something. I've wondered if this particular tape was saved because it contains dialogue between Catherine Faulkner and Chuang Tzu which was ultimately cut from the episode.

There is a certain amount of "dead air" during the 14 minutes where all you hear is the rustling of clothes or the creaking of furniture. These are very somber, intense scenes. Be a little patient. It takes a bit over a minute before the voice of Jean Marsh enters with "All my life I have hated words "

The tape provides an interesting glimpse into the meticulous directorial style of Alf Kjellin. In contrast, later tapes reveal the somewhat slapdash though cordial style of Earl Bellamy. I think The War Lord greatly benefited from the careful craftsmanship of Alf Kjellin.
