A Back-Up Review of Mr. C's Many Talents ....

O.K. now Herman, this posting is solely for the sake of starting some deep, intellectual, stimulating, and insightful conversation ...

I recently ran across this review on the "Filmspot.com" website. It is a commentary about a side of our Mr. Culp's talents, his more unsung talents, that are not often addressed. The review was written by a lady called "pirategennie" and can be viewed at the bottom of the page of this link. Read it and share your views with us on this matter!

http://www.filmspot.com/people/5338/robert-culp/index.html

I guess she truly sees the panorama of our Bob's talents.
I checked around the "Loring Photography Archives" and happened across
a few photos that back-up "pirategennie's" theory and comments ....

(O.K. for any of you who want to try their hand at identifying these episodes, I'll provide the answers later
.... and whew! Is it getting a little warm in here or what?? )

And to dear "pirategennie," your theory stands up well, and NOT just for Kelly Robinson - how about ....

Cowboy Hoby

Thomas Luther Price and Hannie

and don't forget that "House of Seven Gables," too ....

As always,
Tatia

( The "Filmspot.com" site is listed as a "Beta" version. I sure hope it is totally under construction, because the bio at the beginning is really dreadful and very poorly written.)

I love the pictures. And you guys teased me about the singular focus of my screencaps. I'm telling you, there just are a lot of shirtless photos!

Interesting orientation. I, of course, live on such a high intellectual plane that I never notice things like

We cannot leave off Culp's fascinating portrayal of Bill Maxwell!

One more Bill Maxwell talent (picture is a little north of all his talents, but nonetheless).

I should add that in Argentina, Bob was known, back in the Trackdown days, as "Culito de Comboy", which is translated as "Cowboy's Ass" -- in that, he didn't have any. The lack of gluteal definition amongst the Culp men was always a source of amusement around the house.

I think Mr. Cosby has him trounced in that department.

I do have to say though, after looking at these pictures, for a moment I thought I was on "Culpalicious".

Down, Girls!

September 19 2007, 11:55 AM

I did my best to maintain a cool, high-minded silence, but this is just too irresistable! Ladies, I am shocked! That so studious a forum -- so dedicated to the appreciation of the art of acting and writing and the joys of sixties television, has descended to this! What can possibly be next?

Well, I'll tell you -- I must confess that in my scouring of old 2nd hand tape and record stores, I came across a title that you may be familiar with: "A Name For Evil". I sat and watched it with my mouth hanging open in wonder, and I wonder, since this extensive discussion of Mr. Culp's talented backside has exploded into a near seminar, why this film is not being discussed in this context. Not only is there ample footage of the "portion" in question, in all its glory, but indeed there is NO portion left to the imagination! Heavens to Betsy! as my mother used to say! He really, in the time-honored sixties phrase, "Let it all hang out"! Not only that, but this inexplicable piece of cinema also contains extended love scenes with what I gather was his girlfriend at the time, and eventual stepmother to the Culp boys, Miss Sheila Sullivan! One wonders how odd it must have been for those boys, once they were old enough to see it, to view this unnatural wonder!

I am kind of curious as to what was behind this film -- with all its odd, elliptical scenes, what there is to see of Culp's performance (aside from the "natural" settings) seemed very powerful indeed, and yet the film makes very little sense and seems as though something was left out. But what wasn't left out is all too plain to see!

If we're discussing talented backsides, I would have to cast my vote not for the rather modest physique of Mr. Culp (this has nothing to do with his handsomeness or his remarkable agility and physical grace) but for the rather spectacular buttocks of Mr. Cosby, and I would like to hear an amen!

However, you can't fault Mr. Culp for bravery -- I read once that even Marlon Brando, while making "Last Tango", decided not to show himself in his altogether because he was worried about "shrinkage" and that his audience would be disappointed. I suppose its debatable whether or not if this film had reached a wide audience, what it might have done for our hero's career!

regards,

Dotterer

Oh dear!

September 19 2007, 2:14 PM

Oh dear!!

Now, now ... I did preface my original posting with " O.K. this is solely for the sake of starting some deep, intellectual, stimulating, and insightful conversation." .... Ummm, errrr, I think I'll add "Be careful what you wish for."

With all due decorum and delicacy, dear Dotterer, we have discussed "A Name for Evil" along the way .... just pop it into the "Search" box. But for some of us, like poor, little innocent Tatia, we'll just go with ...

Here's one of my postings on the film, that sort of sums it up .... including my in-depth analysis of the "evil twin brother actually starring in the movie" and the "alien replacement" theories.

http://www.network54.com/Forum/172251/message/1148872067/

Unfortunately, it looks like Bob got involved in a production that ran out of money right before they got to wardrobe .... and as troopers, the actors just went on with the show - in the cold woods of Canada! In fact, in that "one" scene, when Bob starts to cough, I was quite concerned that the poor man was coming down with pneumonia!

I guess in the long run, the "eclectic" choices of roles he has undertaken over the years, is what makes our Mr. Culp all the more interesting.

Tatia

well, shut my mouth!

September 20 2007, 5:09 PM

Oh, well -- stupid me, always behind the times! I didn't realize this had been discussed so extensively!

As amusing as your Alien Replacement theory is, I must confess I'm still curious what Mr. Culp's (and the writer-director's) original intentions were regarding this film, beyond simply making money. As I said, what I saw of his performance (not just the dirty bits) looked like it had a lot of power in it, and I have to believe that someone of his stature (at least, at that point) does not just take it all off unless he feels strongly about the project -- is that ignorant of me?

Also, I have the sinking feeling, from Tatia's comment that she should have been "careful what she asked for", that possibly I exceeded the boundaries of "delicacy and decorum" in jumping into the discussion of backsides with a little too much girlish enthusiasm! I try to keep my lascivious mouth shut, but once I get started .... ! Maybe I'll have to look into this Culpalicious business. Is there a Cosby-licious?

regards,

Dotterer

Don't You Dare ....

September 20 2007, 6:03 PM

RE: Well, shut my mouth ....

Don't you dare, dear Dotterer !!

That's what a FORUM is all about - a lively exchange of ideas, thoughts, and viewpoints.

And don't you worry about Tatia's delicate sensibilities. I think I can handle it.

As to "A Name for Evil" .... you posed some thought-provoking questions ...

Did you like the "What the hell was he thinking?" theory any better?

I do believe that he was gathering funds for "Hickey & Boggs," and hopefully he was paid a goodly sum for his "appearance" in the film.
