I have been tuning in intermittently to the 48-hour Twilight Zone marathon on the SciFi channel and it is mind-boggling to see all the actors who also made an appearance on I Spy.

I'm a Trek geek and I've only been able to see I Spy in recent years. So it's a real kick for me to see all the actors from Trek, which was also filmed at Desilu.

I just saw the I Spy Sally Kellerman ep and she's in "Where No Man Has Gone Before", which is the second Trek pilot.

Susan Oliver is the Green Orion Slave Girl (along with other incarnations) in The Cage, which was the first Trek Pilot.

Roger C. Carmel (Harry Mudd) is a great character actor who has a couple appearances on I Spy.

The list goes on and on.

Twilight Zone and Star Trek

January 8 2008, 12:25 AM

I am a Trek geek, too, but just TOS. And there are definitely many actors who appeared on both Star Trek and I Spy. Last night I saw a program on PBS called The Pioneers of Television. This episode was about the early TV comedies and focused on The Honeymooners, I Love Lucy, Make Room for Daddy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and The Andy Griffith Show. Needless to say, there were plenty of references to both Sheldon Leonard and Carl Reiner.

Andy Griffith told a nice story about appearing on Make Room for Daddy (the Danny Thomas show) for the first time, which was the episode that was spun off as The Andy Griffith Show. He said that Danny Thomas and Sheldon Leonard yelled at each other all day and night and Andy became discouraged and told Sheldon that if that is what TV was like, maybe he wasn't cut out for TV. He said Sheldon told him (paraphrasing), "Danny likes to yell, so on his set, we all yell. If you don't like yelling, there won't be any yelling on your set." And he said from that point on there wasn't.

Anyway, there are three other episodes of the Pioneers show to come - late night talk shows, variety shows, and game shows - but nothing that would include I Spy. Still, if you're interested in that era of television, it is a pretty good series with tons of interviews from the "pioneers".

January 8 2008, 1:20 AM

Hi Becca and Betsy,

I caught the first PBS "Pioneers in Television" all about SITCOMS the other night, too. Very well done!

Here's the link to their website ... talking about the other 3 upcoming episodes.

http://www.pbs.org/pioneersoftelevision/

And of the shows you mentioned "Make Room for Daddy," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and "The Andy Griffith Show" were all done by our magnificent maestro EARLE HAGEN!!

As to the I SPY/STAR TREK Connection ....

Well, a few years back, I got a bit carried away and did a photo thing on ALL the "Connections."
