We know nothing about the subtitles issue.
I remember that Image Entertainment released "The Twilight Zone" with CC (closed captions) but from season 2 in 2005.
I am interested in the issue of English subtitles because of the educational purpose: learning the peculiar idioms
and understanding the details of the characters.

I can never see why people start posting reviews on Amazon before they've seen the actual product, and here is a case in point.
These capsule reviews so far posted don't tell us (the I SPY fan) anything we don't already know, so they aren't that helpful. They are reviews of the *series*, NOT the actual DVDs!
What we need to know is: are there any extras (even if only the same ones as previously included)? Is the picture and sound significantly improved? People like Stefan need to know if there are subtitles (and I do agree that there is no excuse now for lack of subtitling on DVD releases.....).
Still not really convinced that these are worth buying over the original releases. And it looks like Image aren't seeking to convince anyone either. Which probably tells you something.
Just to let you know that I pre-ordered today the three season sets of "I Spy".
Next stop: mid-May 2008.
I will publish a report in this forum about the quality of the DVDs:
*Picture quality
*Sound quality
*Subtitles and captions
*DVD artwork
*Interactive menu
*Extras
Stay tuned...
Hi Stefan, Simon, John T., and all our more tech-savvy crew!!
I thought you might be interested in this discussion I just ran across about the new I SPY re-mastered DVDS - on the "Home Theater Forum." Most of the discussion seems to have taken place when the DVDs were first announced.
I think their comments and reactions are pretty similar to ours. Everyone likes the price, but they, too, are wary of the cost and that no information has been released as to what sort of re-mastering has been done ....
Since I am not that tech savvy, I will rely on your reviews and await your recommendations before ordering any of the news ones. As I've mentioned before, I have been most pleased with the original set of I SPY DVDs, but will wait for your reviews - especially about if they have included any new extras, any new Culp commentaries, or any significant improvements on the discs themselves.
Here's the discussion on the re-mastered I SPY DVDs - on "The Home Theater Forum" ....
I also saw this on Image Entertainment's site - no new information, but they do list these tech specs on one of the I SPY sets. (Is this regular audio and aspect ratio information? I couldn't find anything similar on the original sets to compare this to ...)
Image Entertainment gives the strict minimum data.
They don't mention that the discs are double-sided (which I believe they are: how can you put 28 episodes in 5 discs).
They don't mention captions and extras.
The aspect ratio is correct meaning it is the usual full frame.
Don't worry, I will cover the errors that were present in the previous sets: dirty old main titles, video moiré patterning especially on "Home to Judgment", defective interactive menu on set #3--a nightmare to select individual episodes and Culp's audio comments.
Let's hope they add CC--I own a 2005 DVD box set from that company that contains CC.

Glad you are going to review all the technical stuff I don't understand or probably notice. What is "dirty old main titles"?
I will just be happy if they keep in all the scenes in whereby Culp removes his shirt, trousers, is in a bathing suit, etc. I have few demands otherwise regarding the new issued DVDs.

Well, I noticed low picture quality on my old "I Spy - box set 3" as uncleaned main titles with saturated light (meaning for instance, the red background is too vivid and it shouldn't be if you compare with other opening titles from the same set) and speck of hair and dust.
Worst, in "Home to Judgment", when Bill Cosby introduces himself to Will Geer in the prairie to get a job, you can witness a moiré on his white outfit.
And the list of flaws due to old prints goes on and on...
Indeed, while the discs are apparently "remastered," as they are going down in price so much it would seem unlikely (and financially even unwise!) for Image to do too much with these discs -- any kind of work on these discs, including captioning, costs money, so the fact that we can get whole seasons for under 20 bucks each makes me think to assume the worst...now, earlier it was reported that Culp said he had done something for these new releases, no? So that indeed would make me optimistic that there is some new material -- but if it was an exhaustive restoration of 80 episodes of television, I don't see how they could possibly charge so little.
Hope springs eternal, I guess, but I would imagine the re release at a cheaper price is just an effort to get the shows back on tight store shelves...
Image Enternainment has already released season sets with closed captions in 2005: "The Twilight Zone"--I know I own the season 2 set.
Besides, all Paramount vintage series are released with, at least, closed captions and sometimes, closed captions and subtitles.
Let's wait and see...

Your attention to Cosby moire (whatever that is) while our lean, battered Culp is lying in physical and emotional misery in the loft in "Home to Judgment" is amazing.
If the whole rest of the show aside from those shots of Culp had been in black and white and shown upside down, I would not have noticed.
