MBF here, reporting in from the field on yet another Culp family event, happy to announce that eldest son Joshua Shannon Culp reached the half century mark this past Sunday, April 6th. The celebration was held at a park, where a lavish spread was laid out and the guest list featured all the Culps, except daughter Rachel, though her two sons were in attendance.

Joshua, for those who don't know, besides playing the young Bill Maxwell in the newsreel footage from the GAH episode, "Vanity, Said the Preacher" (some screen grabs if you please, Tatia), is also an accomplished art director and carpenter, who seems to be the only Culp offspring who has inherited his father's gift for woodworking.

Bob was looking good as always and a family photo (not for public consumption I am sorry to say), featured Bob, his children, grandchildren and family friends (yours truly included, of course), looking happy and healthy.

That's all for now.

Culpably yours,

MBF

Wood-working

April 10 2008, 10:59 AM

Hello, MBF,

Thanks for the update on Culp clan causes of celebration! I hope Rachel didn't attend due to some other reason aside from illness.

Can you please expand on Bob's skill with wood-working? Does he have a workshop at his house and regularly (perhaps at least in the past) make carpentry items? Any particular kind of items he specializes in fashioning? Does he sell them or are they part of his and his family members' homes?

Thanks for any additional info you can so generously provide.

Bob began doing carpentry when he was a struggling actor in New York in the 50s, as he couldn't always afford furniture. In addition to custom building his kid's childhood bedrooms, he also created fun toys out of wood, including an amazing Japanese-style robot.

He doesn't have a workshop at his house, nor has he indulged in the craft of woodworking for quite some time. On that same note, he never sold any of his pieces, which were always made either for decoration or practicality.

Thanks MBF for keeping us up with the Culp Family News.

As per your request, Tatia ventured deep down into the "Loring Photography Archives" .... and found a few photos of
the Birthday Guy - Joshua !!

One of my favorite photos of Dad in action - with a very little Joshua

And Joshua as a young Bill Maxwell

Happy Big 50 to Number #1 son!!

(And MBF, as Catherine would say to the War Lord ... I hope I have been of some value! )

As always,

Tatia

P.S. And Mona, check out this TV Guide article titled "He Bears Witness to His Beliefs - Robert Culp's Character is Revealed by His Behavior on I Spy and Off" by Dick Hobson" from 1966. It describes some of the woodworking Bob did on their home, including the kids' bedrooms. You'll find this part right after the small photo inserted in the article.

Hanging Beds From the Ceiling!

Great article by TV Guide and I did indeed love the descriptions of Culp's creative bedroom designs for his kids. I also got a few more pieces of his past clarified. Really terrific article for being so brief. Thanks for the reference, Tatia!
