Kelly & Scotty & ROLEX

Hi everyone,

I stumbled over this site the other day highlighting an "I SPY" feature .... It is called JAKE'S ROLEX WATCH BLOG: Exploring the History of Rolex Design. And, yep, BOTH Scotty & Kelly were aficionados of this treasured timepiece. It says that they both wore the PEPSI GMT model on "I SPY."

And it also says that "Bill Cosby is a huge Rolex Collector and has worn Rolex watches longer than just about anybody. The only person I can think of who has been wearing Rolex watches longer than Bill Cosby is Chuck Yeager." And if I remember correctly from our Mr. Culp's "I SPY" DVD commentaries, he got in a bit of hot water with Sheldon because of his contacts with Rolex ...

I wonder what model Chuang-Tzu is wearing? Perhaps he picked one up when he was in Hong Kong
while watching Kelly and Scotty "from at a distance" that week before he flew them to meet Catherine??

After a crash course on Rolex on the internet, I learned that the Pepsi GMT model got its name because it had a red and blue bezel ...resembling Pepsi colors. They don't make these any longer, though a 50th commemorative model was apparently produced....

At this site .... while they say their competitor's price is $6,900.00 - they can provide you with one at the bargain price of $5,975.00!

Don't all rush over there at once to get yours!!

O.K. Here's an example of the Pepsi GMT ROLEX on "I SPY"
.... anyone know which episode this is from??

As always,

Checking the Time

September 3 2008, 11:47 PM

I always found it an unusual coincidence that Chuang-Tzu, as perfectly shown in Tatia's photo, flexed his wrist in the exact same way Kelly did when checking the time on his Rolex. It's a pretty extreme movement just to see what time it is and for two men to do it similarly is highly intriguing. You'd think the two of them were related somehow.....

Mystery Numbers

September 4 2008, 2:48 AM

I haven't been able to figure out the significance or useage of the series of numbers surrounding the face of the watch that are on that red and blue background. It appears this is a ring can be rotated around the face of the watch, judging from several of the photos.

My watch has the numbers 13 though 24 around the inner face so that one can readily use the 24-hour clock or "military time" if he so desires. But those numbers on the Rolex don't correspond to an application such as that.

Msybe I'll spring for one of these watches one of these days when I get enough discretionary income.

Russ

Russ, the clue to the outer ring of numbers is that the watch is known as a ROLEX GMT (GMT Master II). I looked at a Rolex site and this watch has an extra hand—the red one in Tatia’s image which is a 24 hour hand. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is the mean solar time at the Greenwich meridian specified from 0 to 24 hours. So GMT is the same for everyone everywhere which is handy when you are trying to fix the time of occurrence of an event for people spread across time zones. You can rotate the outer ring of the watch to correct for your particular time zone and then read GMT right off the watch (or tune your shortwave radio to WWV out of Fort Collins, Colorado, or WWVH on Kauai).

Here on the west coast we are 7 hours behind Greenwich (normally it would be 8, but we’re presently on Daylight Savings Time). So as I write this it is 12:35 PDT and 19:35 GMT. You would rotate the outer ring of your Rolex GMT seven clockwise clicks to set up your watch and meet all your GMT needs.

Jimmy

RE: Mystery Numbers and Your Basic Bling ...

September 5 2008, 5:12 PM

Thank you for the scientific explanation, Mr. Mitchell, about the Rolex GMT Master II and what the GMT means and how it functions. I, too, was most curious about it. And I also have been reading up a bit more and am amazed at all the famous people who have sported a Rolex or two in their day.

And apparently this timeless chronometer favored by Scotty and Kelly also comes in a COKE version, besides the PEPSI one ...

BUT ( ... and I wouldn't want to add a sexist slant here ... ), to me, the most "interesting" model of the PEPSI GMT appears to be residing at the WYNN Hotel's Boutique in Las Vegas - that's the golden one with the additional diamonds frosting the sides - which can be compared to the simpler model below it, which "only" features your "basic" sapphires, rubies, and scattered diamonds.

I guess when you have enough money to afford these babies, "gaudy" and "ostentatious" aren't words that are included in your vocabulary. These definitely qualify as MUCHO BIG-TIME BLING!!

As always,

Tatia

Hey there Russ,

You wrote:

Well, that's going to be SOME kind of discretionary income!!

As we all know from NO EXCHANGE ON DAMAGED MERCHANDISE ... Scotty explained that he and Kelly were issued TWO watches. There was the "luxurious one" for going out to dinner and things - and - another one for wearing during "mountainous gunfire and swimming underwater." Unfortunately, Kelly wore his luxurious watch while participating in those 2nd watch activities, which led to those charming opening and closing typewriter scenes in that episode.

Well it seems that Kelly learned his lesson from that incident, as our Mr. Culp appears to be sporting that second variety of watch at Comic-con this year. Looks like he was prepared for any and all contingencies there, huh ... ?

And RIGHT you are Bulwer-Lytton .... this photo is from THE TIGER - and how Kelly was able to signal Scotty to help save the day! Way to go ROLEX!! Way to go B-L !!

As always,

Tatia
