Super treat, today, thanks to our own inimitable Jimmy Mitchell - audio wizard - and all-round nice guy
(O.K. so he's got rather unique tastes in clothes.)

[linked image]

Awhile back, he was able to arrange an audio link for our "Singing Bob" from his BONANZA outing "Broken Ballad."

He hasn't found a satisfactory site yet that will let us embed the direct .mp3 link, so for "4shared" you will need to download the file. It is quick and easy. Just click on the link below, which will take you to a page that has a big blue "Download" button. Click on that, and it will take you to a 2nd page, where you will have to wait a few seconds as it counts down. Then just Click on the link.

(I JUST discovered that you do NOT have to DOWNLOAD the audiofiles to listen to them on "4shared."

Right under the .mp3 file name there is a little audio player. Just press the start button and it plays.

Of course, if you do want to "Download" the file to keep a copy for yourself, then just click on the blue DOWNLOAD button.)

BUT ....

That is not all!! happy.gif

Our great Jimmy discovered and downloaded TATIA (a.k.a. Laura Devon) singing 2 Henri Mancini songs from the film GUNN (1967). This was a movie made after the "Peter Gunn" (1958-1963) TV series was over.

Craig Stevens still plays Gunn, but Lola Albright's Edie was replaced with Ms. Devon, and Herschel Bernardi, as the policeman Lt. Jacoby, was replaced with Ed Asner.

GUNN was directed by Blake Edwards - and a "few" I SPY alum"nums" were also in the film:

Albert Paulsen, George Murdock, Alan Oppenheimer, and Carol Wayne!

The lovely Ms. Devon was also a singer, besides being a talented actress (remember she sang a bit in "Tatia.") She was married to the composer Maurice Jarre for many years. Mr. Jarre was responsible for such amazing film scores as -"Lawrence of Arabia," "Dr. Zhivago." "The Longest Day, "Gambit," "Ryan's Daughter," "Shogan" to name just a few.

When a man takes a guitar in his hand

March 20 2009, 4:05 PM

Thanks, Jimmy and Tatia. I know Culp's singing gets maligned--Pernell Roberts, who sings a duet with him in that episode, sounds like Pavarotti by comparison--but he certainly carries a tune a lot better than I do. (You don't want to hear me sing, I guarantee you.) Anyway, I love his voice whether he's singing or speaking.

Regards--

I Like The Look

March 22 2009, 1:21 AM

If these were audition tapes I would probably hire Tatia and tell Kelly to keep his day job. (I'll try and make it up to you B-L by bringing some new/old examples of Robert Culp's speaking voice to the Forum soon, starting with his very cool performance on "long-playing records" in Dr. Faustus.)

Laura Devon had a background singing in nightclubs. When I learned that she had recorded two Henry Mancini songs from the film "Gunn" I knew that I would eventually have to score a copy of the 45 RPM record. I was curious to hear her. We got a little taste in "Tatia" when she sings a bit of "God Bless the Child".

Thanks to the long arm of the Internet there are few cultural artifacts that can't be turned up. I found the Laura Devon single in the stock of one of the online old record dealers in his "oddball" category. And I suppose from a modern perspective the record is pretty odd. The copy I got is labeled "not for sale", looking exactly like the images Tatia posted, and was intended for radio air play. It was probably discarded by some radio station long ago. One wonders if it ever got any air play. The poor record suffered abuse over the years as you can hear, particularly at the beginning of "I Like the Look".

When I first listened to the record I wasn't impressed with either the singing or the songs. Both have since grown on me as I heard them a number of times in the process of converting the recordings to digital files, particularly "I Like the Look". I think Laura Devon brings it off rather well. As far as I can determine, this was her only commercial recording. And "Gunn" was her last screen credit. As Tatia said, she married composer Maurice Jarre and pretty much dropped from sight. I was happy to let our Tatia Loring introduce the songs since she does it so well. It's oddly satisfying to bring this obscure record to light, even if only for the handful of people that will download it from this Forum.

Her son Kevin Jarre is a screen writer and, I just discovered, has a couple of acting credits on IMDB: "Gotham" from 1988 and a 2009 film called "She Found Them on the Train Tracks" which I don't think will be playing at your neighborhood multiplex. But at least someday we will be able to check him out on screen.

Jimmy

(I Spy Forum - Robert Culp, Bill Cosby) More Ms. Devon in "CHINESE SUNSET" ...

March 26 2009, 1:38 AM

For all you Tatia/Laura Devon fans out there ....

Look what I just found on YouTube!!!

[linked image]

Laura Devon in a FUGITIVE episode - this must be the one where all the photos of her with Paul Richards came from.

It's from 1966 - right around "Tatia" time and the episode is called "Chinese Sunset."

[linked image]

[linked image]

Paul Richards look familiar? He's Chanetsov from "The Spy Business."

[linked image]

Here's the link for "Chinese Sunset."

Unfortunately, there seems to be an annoying little caption that pops up in the middle of the screen constantly. I imagine this may have been copy-protected material and that's the result ?? But "I'd put up with anything, anything" just to see Ms. Devon again in all her beauty and glory!! I also have the feeling that this one is not going to be around long, so I'd watch it soon.

Enjoy!!

As always,

Tatia happy.gif
