Now the new stuff. Let's Kill Karlovassi seems to have been filmed entirely in Greece. There are exterior scenes on the islands of Delos and Hydra, but the interiors were shot in an unnamed Athens studio according to the documentation in the tape boxes. Also, the home of Maria Galonis (Ruth Roman) seems to have been an actual residence on Hydra.

The first tape (#7 in the Karlovassi sequence) is from 17 May 1967. The location is Hydra. There are many takes of various parts of the discussion between Kelly and Scotty concerning their new role as assassins as they move about the grounds of Maria Galonis' residence. They were surprised to hear themselves referred to as "tholophonos" (Greek for assassin) when they arrived on the island. In this exchange, Scotty refers to himself as the "North Philadelphia tholophonos". When no other actors were involved, they seemed to enjoy taking considerable liberties with the dialogue from take to take, still conveying the essential information. Robert Culp gets frustrated with someone or something (maybe the actor who is sweeping). Listen for his WTF! Christian "Chris" Nyby is the director.

The next tape is from 18 May 1967 and moves inside Maria Galonis' residence. When they are out on her deck or balcony, the audio competition from passing fishing boats is fierce. Both script supervisor Michael Preece, and director Christian Nyby are heard reading the lines of Culp and Cosby during close-ups of the other actors.

The last tape is from 20 May 1967. We have now moved to a "studio in Athens" which here serves as the interior of Karlovassi's (Walter Slezak) boat. There isn't much Culp or Cosby on this one. It's mostly Roman and Slezak (and some Peter Wyngarde and Irene Prador) with Michael Preece reading the lines of almost everyone at one time or another. Michael Preece made a sound career decision when he segued into directing, rather than acting. Someone must have been taking photographs because Walter Slezak asks the person to stop clicking the camera while he's trying to say his lines.

Lady Windermere's Fan is a four act comedy by Oscar Wilde, first produced 22 February 1892 at the St James Theatre in London. The story concerns Lady Windermere who discovers that her husband may be having an affair with another woman. She confronts her husband but he instead invites the other woman, Mrs. Erlynne, to her birthday ball. Angered by her husband's unfaithfulness, Lady Windermere leaves her husband for another lover. After discovering what has transpired, Mrs. Erlynne follows Lady Windermere and attempts to persuade her to return to her husband and in the course of this, Mrs. Erlynne is discovered in a compromising position. She sacrifices herself and her reputation in order to save Lady Windermere's marriage. The fan in the title can refer to both the physical object--which Lord Windermere buys for her as a 21st birthday present--and to her admirer, Lord Darlington--who pays her deeply flattering compliments and eventually reveals his love for her.

Robert Culp plays Lord Darlington and is amusingly fawning in the attentions he pays to Lady Windermere. Elayne Carroll is The Duchess of Burwick (again, a matronly part for her). There is no cast list on the LP sleeve. It merely states that the performance is "played by a distinguished cast headed by Robert Culp and Elayne Carroll".

The play, as adapted and directed by Elayne Carroll and Robert M. Culp for LP, is presented below in two parts corresponding to the two sides of the LP.

I always enjoy these (have only listened to a third or so at this point, but it's a lot of material to get through)...have you actually acquired ALL the albums Culp put out in the 50s? An important task, no doubt! Good for you!

Reversing Entropy

October 27 2009, 2:04 PM

I haven't acquired all the Carroll/Culp LPs, but the search continues. I'm just doing my bit to reverse entropy. There appear to have been fourteen of these LPs released. To date I have acquired nine of them. The nine (the number refers to the release order) are:

1) Lady Windermere's Fan by Oscar Wilde
2) Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen
3) Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov
4) The Rivals by Richard Sheridan
5) Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe
6) The Way of the World by William Congreve
7) All for Love by John Dryden
9) The Doctor in Spite of Himself by Moliere
10) She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith

I have not found:

8) The Master Builder by Henrik Ibsen
11) Soleme' by Oscar Wilde
12) The Sea Gull by Anton Chekhov
13) A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen
14) The School for Scandal by Richard Sheridan

I'll be posting Ghosts and The Rivals in the near future. There are some problems with the All for Love files (the last two parts). Something went slightly wrong in the multi-step process of converting the wiggly LP groove to mp3 audio. There are occasional small skips in the audio. They are still listenable, but when I'm done posting everything, I'll go back and fix those (and let you know).

Jimmy
