There's an article in SOD that says Dave is a California Highway Patrol officer, but maybe they got it wrong.

He IS a California Patrol Officer who pilots a small plane as a hobby.

He is a pilot on the side as a hobby. Ali actually does charity work for the California Highway Patrol widows and widowers foundation. But yes Dave is a police officer.
