Salem Place is safe

February 22 2005 at 1:22 PM
Kim

I asked Andrea, the show's publicist, and she assures us that Salem Place has most certainly not been torn down.
An office building is being constructed across the street from the set. "Days" will not be able to tape outside during the next year on account of the noise, so they dismantled the lighting and things for now until they're able to resume outdoor taping.

Great!

That is great news and good to hear for Janet told us in chat last week that it had been taken down. Hopefully, we will see more of it this summer when all of the Salemites are back in Salem.

Thanks Kim!

Janet has been known before to get information wrong...

I trust Stephanie Sloane a ton before I trust Janet.

Maybe Janet was misinformed. I guess it would be easy to make the assumption when the lights, monitors and other equipment that's normally sitting around or suspended from the ceiling are gone. Especially if she doesn't get over there often. One of the times I visited the Salem Place set, things were a little messed up; I think part of the landscaping was torn up and either my mom or dad asked me if the show's town was supposed to have been hit by hurricane.

I'm just relieved that it isn't gone.

Janet does visit the set often and has recently, but maybe it just looks torn up and she thought it was!??????

in WHERE they're putting the office building! LOL I've been on that set and there's no room across the street! At least I surely don't remember any! LOL

Kim, can you ask the publicist what they did with the huge billboard they had hanging on the side of the NBC building in 2003? She should remember it, it was fricken huge and was billboard of the official photos of the contract players at that time. I've always wondered what's come of it.

Thank you!

There's a big empty lot across the street.

Andrea doesn't know what they do with those banners.

You see those trees just right to "Salem Place" (where the red arrow is)? It's in front of those.

Several years ago they filmed some scenes of Belle and Mimi supposedly walking outside of their school building. Those scenes were shot to the left of Salem Place, in front of those sound stages with the black windows. Those two stages are where they tape "Days".
They've shot parking lot scenes there as well.

The greenery and area to the right edge of the sound stage is another studio entrance that doubles for the show's emergency room exterior. Inside is a small room with framed soap magazine covers on the wall featuring "Days" stars.

Just below the "E" in Salem is the roof of the "Java Café".

The white satellite dish to the far right has gotten into shots before (probably not intentionally) when characters were shown sitting on the park bench across from SP.

how did you get that picture?

From a book that I have of aerial views of the L.A. area. What I posted is only about a third of the picture. The entire thing was too big to scan.

At least 10-15 years old. Probably older. I'd have to check. In the original photo you can see that the cars are big and boxy.

The last time I was there was around five years ago and I didn't recall seeing anything on that lot at the time. If I remember correctly, it seemed overgrown with weeds.

There's another huge empty lot on the opposite side of the studios by the freeway. But again, it's an old picture.

Okay, ...I was there 2 yrs. ago, and if I can remember it correctly there is now a park across the road where the huge empty lot is in the picture and if I am not mistaken that is where the J&J pics were taken that were so famous when they were so hot! There is also a guard building up to the main entrance where you have to check in as you take a tour etc. When we were there in 03, Salem Place was empty/dead! I do hope they keep it for it was neat to see the scenes there in the summer and it was beautifully decorated at Christmas too.

Yes, ...as I said, if I remember it correctly! Do you see the entrance that the actors drive in? Jay Leno uses it too. In the picture that you scanned, it looks bare, but I remember something like a park over there now, and do you remember the photo shoot long ago...where J&J were walking on a wall or something with their arms outstretched, and where he had his head on her knees! I was told that over there was where it was taken? There are trees etc over there now not bare. I hope I am not turned around here, but I do see the entrance where they go in & where Leno parks his car etc...so, I have that right. ;>)

Ok, I think I've seen those pictures before.

I'm not sure which entrance it is on the picture. Which one?

Isn't there a park named after Johnny Carson somewhere around there?

Kim, could I be referring to the other side? I think we went in on the opposite side. Since you have marked some things, Leno's parking place is not where I thought it was or where they go to eat. I think we went in on the other side [top of the picture]?

Thanks for marking some of the things, that makes it some clearer!

Yep, that's it Kim...

February 27 2005, 8:57 AM

where you have the banner question marked is EXACTLY where the billboard was hanging. It ran the height of the building. Had four photos going across and ran about 5 rows worth of castmembers.

Also Leno is back there....I got to see his car! I didn't see the commissary though.

Apparently I saw Brenda's wall and didn't realize the significance! I stood on it to take a picture of the billboard.....

The only thing I didn't see was the cast parking. For some reason I thought it was in the front by the PR office.

I was there in 2003 too..

February 27 2005, 8:53 AM

and Salem Place was empty but it was constructed. The entrance to the movie theater was actually the entrance to ask about Leno tickets and for the tours and it's where they sell the show and Passions merchandise.

Salem Place still included the payphone Shawn used to call Belle when they were going through Jan Round 1. The movie board was still up, Ballistix was there, the chairs and tables of Java Cafe were stacked up but the the menu was still there. LOL The Salem Place sign was up as well. Actually it was that parking lot (in front of Salem Place) where the big billboard was hanging off the side of the building.

And now that I think about it, across the street from the parking lot was a woodsy/weedy area, I guess I just didn't really notice it than and it didn't seem that large!

Well, now I'm kind of confused. I'm not 100% certain on a couple of those.

Maybe that supposedly empty lot on the top right is Johnny Carson park.

We parked, I think, over there by the freeway one time, near Carson park. We had to walk all along that outer right side of the studio until we reached "Salem Place" aka Public Relations. Another time we parked on the side of that street in front of the bottom empty lot. Other times we just drove up to "Salem Place" and parked in that area on the side. I've done the studio tour twice, but I've visited SP several times.

LOL, Kim, we will be confused together. I have only been there once, and we went in the entrance where ever Leno parks his car. I even have pictures of his the car he drove that day. The commissary is right across from his car, right? Salem Place was still there, but we were told it was not longer in use and that was right before Reilly's work had started. This was on a Monday and I think around June 2nd or 3rd of 03.

It is nice to know that it is still there and hopefully will be back in use this summer.

Maybe both of us crazy and neither of us know what we're talking about.

I think we're on the same page regarding Jay Leno's parking place. I'm assuming your group went inside "The Tonight Show" studio, right? Did the tour guide lead you all outside where you saw Leno's car? Across the street was the long building with the booger green awning? I'm almost certain that's the commissary.

As for Salem Place, I think it's been used plenty of times since Reilly got there.

Salem Place was used quite a bit when Reilly first came back. There was Celeste wondering around there around Thanksgiving. Then Cassie falling out of the pinata, shortly after. That's where Sami had her big fight with Abe and stole a gun to go 'kill' him. That's also where Marlena found Alice alive, sitting on the bench, on the 'island.'

Matthew Ashford took us on our tour, and yes we went in where Leno tapes, and we came back out the same door by his car and the commissary. We walked that long walk out by the guard station where you had to check in and out and we were parked on the street not far from the guard station. There was the park that I was talking about, is that the Johnny Carson Park you were talking about.

We will just be confused together! ;>)

At the time, Salem Place was pointed out to us and we were told it was not in use at the time. So, maybe it had just been awhile and as you said it had been used since Reilly returned.

That is right, something else I remembered too....Jack and Jennifer were at Salem Place when he cut thru the alley was met his date with a brick, right?

Yep! Salem Place was also used for the episodes surrounding Jack's death by bricking, LoL

Anyway, when they said that Salem Place wasn't in use, did they mean that it wasn't being used for taping that day in particular, or that it wasn't going to be used for taping anymore AT ALL?

Yes, Kim's right in diagramming. I'm not certain where the cast parks but when I went the last time I was there, we parked completely in the back, the parking lot over from the cast parking (the middle one). Well what can I say except we got lost on the side streets LOL We had to go through the security parking validation, showing ID's, the whole nine yards etc. Everything's exactly where Kim said it is...and I remember Leno's area well as there was a tiny MG in the space that day. Snazzy car. Commissary is right across the way if I am recalling correctly. The first year I saw the studios and took the regular tour I felt soooo lost going in one door (guest relations) and winding up outside Salem Place!

But whoever said they need a gocart to get from their area parking to the studios was right, IF that is their parking. Talk about some exercise!

I saw it the same weekend..

February 27 2005, 9:03 AM

Brenda did and it was there, the chairs and tables of Java Cafe were packed up, but the tour guide (intern) told us it was because they do that when it's not in use and they don't use it alot in winter. She didn't give any indication that it was permanently closed.
