| I got a response to the note I wrote about drama (Posted down below as untitled) on another board that has given me an entirely different persective on the whole SK/Island storyline. I know JER is known for spoofing typical soap opera storylines like the stuff he wrote back in the 90’s on Days with Kristen and Susan, and the craziness on Passions but with all the murders and theories about the island, I didn’t really consider it seriously. (I didn’t really want to I’ll admit…I wanted a dramatic payoff) The more I thought about it tonight, however the more sense it made to me. The over the top aspect of the murders and then the silly explanation Tony gave Bart, the Jack and Jenn ‘adventures’ on the island, all the crawling around in those stupid air vents in Tony’s compound, the rip off of Psycho with Stefano’s dead body which I didn’t even think at the time was supposed to be scary, Tony continually coming back from the dead, heck, everyone coming back from the dead, the whole Sami/Stan thing…the list could go on and on. JER isn’t writing any kind of intense story here, he’s trying to write a parody.
Unfortunately, if this was JER’s intention, he’s not pulling if off in my opinion. Terry Gilliam he’s not. There’s too much repetition for one thing and Monty Python worked because we all knew it was a spoof, it was never farce parading itself around as drama.
I’m not even sure this is actually what he’s trying to do, but it fits better than anything else I’ve read so far…just don’t think I like it all that much but least I know why Tony and Kate are beginning to remind me more and more of Boris and Natasha from the Rocky and Bullwinkle show.
