playbook problems
by
Has anyone experienced a problem with VPNFL02 and GNFL playbooks. The playbooks load up on the play editor but when I go and load them up on an exhibition game the plays are different. They look like plays from the original stock plays and patch 1.08 stock plays. Does anyone knows what causes this and how to fix it?

Style: GM Simulation with the VPNFL system
Notes: NFL players from 1999-2005 entered into the league via drafts. Eventually a college league will provide draft classes.

"I have a problem getting the game to run. When I get to the screen where I am about to click on Plans Profiles on the EXHIBITION page ,the game shuts down. The error signature is Application Name: hike.exe. Mod Name : shellw.dll
Maybe my hike.exe file is corrupted. I have tried deleting the game re-installing it. No luck. Any advice/ help would be appreciated."
Any ideas on a solution?
Thank you!

"Whew! I think the problem has been corrected. When I uninstalled the game for about the 5th time & then re-installed it, I decided to delete all WFFL files also. Then I tried to play the game with only the NFL leagues that came with the game. Lo & behold , the game worked! Looks like the WFFL files were to blame. Then, went back to the site & I downloaded the WFFL files again: success! I'm back baby! ( I hope )"

I got the itch to play again and started experimenting with the VPNFL files. Instead of setting each team with a specific PPP from the VPNFL files, I decided to save the VPNFL PPPs over the Stock PPPs (ex. OFFPA1, DEFRB2, etc) and then set the Team Profile percentages on the team setup screen to divide the probability a team would use a certain PPP.
To help with realism, on defense I saved 34 PPPs as DEFPA1, DEFPA2, DEFPB1, DEFPB2, DEFPC1, DEFPC2 and saved my 43 PPPs as DEFRA1 DEFRA2, DEFRB1, DEFRB2, DEFRC1, DEFRC2. On the Team Profile screen I selected only the Pass Defense %s if the team was a 34 team and selected only Run Defense %s if the team was a 43 team. I differentiated Aggressive, Balanced and Conservative by having M2M dominant PPP as aggressive, Zone dominant as Conservative and 50/50 M2M and ZN as Balanced.
I did the same process on the offensive side of the ball saving the Run Heavy VPNFL profile over the Stock OFFRA and OFFRC. I saved the VPNFL Pass Heavy profile over the Stock OFFPA and OFFPC. I saved the VPNFL Balanced profile for both OFFRB and OFFPB. I then saved different VPNFL gameplans over the Stock gameplans to match the appropriate profile.
I've played a couple of seasons using the VPNFL ratings thanks to Swift's editor and my gameplay and stats have been fantastic. Team sacks ranged from 66 as a high to 22 as a low. Completion percentage ranged for a team from 64% to 51%. Yards per carry ranged from 4.8 as a team to 3.0 as a low.
The gameplay was awesome to watch because, for example, the Steelers were always in a base 34 in normal situations just as I had selected them to be on the team profile screen. However, they didn't always use the exact same gameplan because the computer would select one of the 6 "Pass" gameplans I had saved over the existing stock gameplan.
The best thing, I don't always know what's coming like I did when I used specific PPP for each team. I can now go in add new plays to the new "stock" plans and the whole league has access immediately.
I haven't read anywhere else on the boards where someone saved the VPNFL PPPs over the Stock PPPs so I wanted to share. If anyone else has done this and found that it caused an issue the more seasons you play, let me know.
Thanks!

There is nothing like playing a FBPro '98 opponent in REAL TIME - watching the action unfold right in front of you!!
We have Custom teams, Custom players, with Custom plays - playing our league games LIVE "Head- 2-Head" online on KALI using 12-minute Quarters!
Mission Statement
What we have here is a fun "Coach's" league.
That means total parity- all players have very similar VPNFL-style ratings. There are no super freak players with crazy abilities. We like our "fresh" player names, custom teams and logos.
The rules are strict- but only because we want AI-buster free games.
The owners in this league are able to trust each-other to play a clean and honest game- because we are all committing at least 2+ hours a week to playing our games online...

I've had to build a new cpu & I've been able to reinstall all of my FBPRO 98' stuff except for two utilites: Ezcap by slashware gives me the following error:Run-time error '339': Component 'FBC.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid. I emailed then but it bounced back. Strangely enough, Draft Pac & Fb Rad work fine. The second util is Team Control. I forget who the author is but I get this when I try to reinstall:component 'msflxgrd.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid. Ideas? Thanks!
Also, I stayed away from Windows 7 just because of this great game. Has anybody tried it & did the utilities work?

I honestly was not going to do it this year b/c Madden came out. Needless to say I still can't stand the game. Therefore it's back to old faithful yet completely realistic FB PRO.
I started gathering the opening day rosters and will work on it. It takes a few weeks to do b/c it's very time consuming, but I am working on it.

I watched WFFL coach Mick's test FBPro '98 game via NetMeeting being played on his PC like it was literally being played on my own machine... We should have been doing this a long time ago... I will be able to give a "word's eye view" of the WFFL Insane Bowl Championship game on our Radio Show while watching their game live in real time!

I remember reading somewhere some kind of fix (perhaps) for fonts on Windows XP, but I can't find it. Was there a some kind of solution, or did I just imagine it? Any help you can give would be great!

I used to have the same problem, and eventually found a fix for it on FBPro Online. Unfortunately, that site appears to be gone. I'm sorry, but I don't remember exactly what fixed the problem, but I think it had something to do with turning off Asian Language/Japanese font support. I know that isn't much to go on, but hopefully it will start you on the right path.

you have foreign language support installed. Here is how you fix this problem: In Windows Go to START / SETTINGS / CONTROL PANEL / REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE OPTIONS and uncheck or uninstall foreign language support. After you do this all of the fonts (words) should look normal...

Additional information about FBPRO head to head in Win 7
by Murdock
You can play FBPro 98 head to head in Windows 7; however, you have to use a TCP/IP based connection to do so. Kali is based upon the IPX/SPX protocol and therefore will not work as, to my knowledge, all IPX/SPX stuff has been stripped out of windows 7.

Ok forgive me if I sound nuts but Is there anyway to change the timeouts called by teams? I mean in a CPU vs CPU game usually all 3 timeouts are gone by 50 to 20 seconds left.. Real NFL Teams dont do that and I want to make this game as real as it can be..
Thanks...

Hi everyone, does anyone use Sundby's 'Unretire' utility? I'm still relatively new to FBPRO and worried about messing up my league files, so was wondering what others experiences were? Are there any known problems with bringing players back for an extra year or maybe two? Thanks!
Posted on May 27, 2009, 2:31 PM from IP address 82.138.203.152
I just used this utility last week & it works like a charm. Back up your league before you use it & make sure you have the player ID #'s before hitting that end of season button. FPS Edit is a useful utility to access the ID #'s.
Good luck,

... retiring players after so many seasons? What if you want to run a Highschool or college type league and "retire" the players after 4 or 5 season? Is there any utility that does this?
Posted on Jun 2, 2009, 1:42 AM from IP address 69.145.144.11
In the college league I run I simply cut any player that is year #4 prior to hitting end of season button. If they remain in the free agent pool, I use FPS Edit to 'kill' them. In nearly every case, the players stats are saved in the career file even after you off them.
Posted on Jun 2, 2009, 7:32 PM from IP address 69.148.146.18
... not sure what you mean by "kill" them? Sounds a little graphic, lol. Can you be more specific about what you do about players that are in the FA pool? How do you basically "retire" them. I think there is a limit in how many FA's you can have in that pool, so you got to find a way to delete them and/or retire them.
Posted on Jun 4, 2009, 2:17 AM from IP address 69.145.144.11
You need to have the fpsedit utility to know what the 'kill' feature is. You can access every player in the game with it. There is a delete button & upon hitting it for a certain player the utlility will ask if you wish to 'kill' the player. No joke.

Nothing. I've literally given 99s across the board for strength, intelligence, and discipline, with endurance thrown in just for kicks (pun intended). The result were kickers between the range of 57% to 95% with the average being around 77%. The biggest problem is kicks from 20 yards and in. Kickers in the real NFL nail 99% of them. In FBPro, it's more like 50% if that high.
Posted on Jun 16, 2009, 4:15 AM from IP address 210.255.180.93
If you used the online link to FBPRO.exe to install the game: Once the game is installed you have to delete the folder that is called "C:FBPRO". That is the folder it expands everything in to. If you don't, when you run the patch, it will install it to the install folder. Of course you keep the C:/Sierra/FBPRO98 folder, and the patch will install in that folder. This may be your issue.

Sorry--I'm sure you've heard this question before but I didn't see it in the FAQs and my manual is long gone.
I still have an old FBPro 98 CD, and I wanted to start playing again. But if I set up a custom league, how do I set up the artwork and venues?
For example, in Madden you have to make sure the helmet is in .bmp format, in the Helmet directory, and is 512 x 256, indexed color. What do you do in FBPro?
Thanks.
Posted on May 7, 2009, 6:17 PM from IP address 96.19.150.182
Do you mean how do you edit the internal artwork in Football Pro? A programmer a while back created a utility that allowed you to edit some of the artwork in Football Pro 98. I've messed with it, but its kinda tricky to work with.
A guys named Jay who runs the Web Freaks Football League has a copy of this utility. Go to this following link and look for the utility "BOA Import/Export Tool".
Basically what I want to do is have custom teams like Tulane, LSU, Penn State, etc. wearing the correct helmets. Same for a custom pro league (ie teams like the Baton Rouge Bandits, Memphis Kings, etc.)
I remember from a long time ago I could only get teams like that with plain helmets.
Posted on May 8, 2009, 3:28 PM from IP address 96.19.150.182
Its a pretty good utility. I don't know how the programmer did it, but somehow he was able to hack into the .BOA files of Football Pro and able to manipulate them in someway. Heck of of an achivement.
There are a couple of limitations with the utility, it only edits the NFL team BOA art in the game. I might be wrong on this, but I don't think you can "add" an edit BOA file to the game and have it show up. So, for your College Artwork project, it probably won't be able to display all 100+ schools, just 30 or so. Also, it is a bit picky on colors. You can simply just import new pics into the BOA, but you got to have the colors mactch EXACTLY to limited palet Football Pro uses, otherwise the Helmets or what ever art will just apprear Black and white.

has anyone tried to convert Madden player ratings to Fb Pro 98 ratings?
In madden a player is rated by throwing power but in Fb pro ist Strength..
in madden its Breaking tackle but in Fb Pro its Strength
In madden its catching but in Fb Pro its hands. But what about Carrying?
See what I mean?
so again Has anyone worked this out?
I would love to convert Muscle Mikes Madden 04 old time rosters ratings to Fb Pro....
Posted on May 2, 2009, 11:25 AM from IP address 71.228.76.32
That was one of the few problems FBPro 98 had back in its days competing with the other Football games on the market. With only 8 different Ratings, it had some limitations. One of the many requests that fans wanted for new versions of Football Pro was to expand the Ratings for players. Football Pro 99 did this (up to 24 different attributes) but the game was a failure. A pity, as FBPro 99 had potential.
As to your question, I think the game combines certain attributes together to calculate different abilities.

First off I have to say how much I love FBPro98, the game just has a feeling of playing football that Madden never seems to capture...
I noticed when I was playing that there were way too many times my players were standing still when the ball came to them, and no matter what I tried it never changed. I went into FPSEdit and dropped all players speed by 5 and their acceleration by 3 and I noticed a lot more players being hit in stride by passes for both myself and the CPU, and some good run after catch numbers, versus the catch the ball and be hit immediately.
I also noticed in a game against Denver they were running a screen play(O1HSCRN, I believe or something close to it), where the blockers would never even be out in front of the back when he caught the ball, resulting in the RB being tackled after a short gain every time...I made some adjustments to the play and tested it against several VPNFL defenses, and I think I have much better results with it, including the LT and FB out in front leading a convoy downfield...depending on the defense the team is in I have seen the play go for anywhere between -5 yards and 51 yards...obviously a blitzing, aggressive defense usually gives up the big plays with screens, which is actually what happens...defenses where multiple defenders drop into coverage are usually able to stop the play after smaller gains...IMHO, it just looks a lot more like what I am watching on Sundays versus some lineman out in space that never even block anyone....

In FBPRO98 xp, I noticed in exhibition games the stats for the leading rusher/receiver
on each team is not shown yet the totals are correct. Can't figure it out except it
may have to do with this college league I'm creating. I'll try some teams from other
leagues and see what happens. Anyone know what may cause this?

Instead of trying to fix the Defense I went in and Changed the Speed and Strength of the Offensive line to 95 each.
I was worried that the RB would run for 200 yards or the QB would throw for 400 a game. But no.. So far my test games are good.
Also I raised the Hands of the DBs to 95 and have interceptions!!! YEA!!
anyone else have good ways to fix the sacks or Int problems?

Sorry so long in a reply, I really didnt see this.. But Yea so far so good..I get anywhere between 2-5 sacks a game CPu vs CPU. Lots better than the 8-10 a game..
I am using the Profiles and playbooks from GNFL site and they work Great!
I go back once in a while to Maximum FB or Madden but always come back to FB PRo 98. its Still the Best game in town!!

I live in Seoul, Korea. First I played 95 for several years since 1994 summer and get 98 ebay hardly in 21c, enjoyes for a few years and be tired of.
I met Madden 07, not bad, but more repugnance.
Now I enjoy soccer game Winning Eleven 8 for years, its middle shoots, long shoots are made by loose ball situation always thrill me.
Yesterday I find fbpro-online in google.
I really want to play 96, 97, 99
99 seems to be terrible. It is coarse Madden.
96 can't be execute in my ablility (I tried so many ways), moreover can't find theme music file. I'm collector Anyone have them?
97. Wow great game. My temporary retire seems to be come to an end.
One bad news is I lost gelat's all in one package.

Go to www.dosbox.com and check it out. It's a dos emulator for xp and it
works like a charm. It's free so download it and install but read the
instructions thoroughly. You'll also need to find "neverlock" to get past
the copyright questions - just do a google search for it.
Be warned the graphics for 94-95 versions are pretty rough but once you
get everything installed it won't crash/burn like fbpro98 does.
From what I gather you can't assign other team's plans/profiles like 98,
only the team you control. Let me know if you find something different
because I dont' have the time to play with it yet.
