Response to Here's the funny part

I am actually very liberal about audition outfits. I don't really care if someone shows up in an outfit that I consider too casual or too formal, and I don't give "points off" for bad fashion. However, what you wear and what state it is in DOES say something about who you are. If someone doesn't know what basic appropriate attire is, chances are there are other basic things about the profession that they don't know, and combined with other factors that may influence how I cast you. If someone is sloppy in their dress, they are very likely to be sloppy in other areas of their lives. Neatness counts, just like your mama always told you.

And whether we like it or not, image counts. I happen to be interested in educating and helping other singers, and in my own professional life it's been demonstrated over and over that looking put together makes a big difference in how you are perceived. When I offer advice about dressing for auditions, these aren't intended to be hard and fast rules for which you will be marked down if you transgress. They're merely my suggestions for how to present yourself in the best possible light.

Some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.
