is that it isn't specific enough. Some people might think that they CAN sing all of those things, because that is what their teacher tells them. Cindy's answer is much more specific in listing pieces of differing fachs. It's extreme, but being that she's been on the other side (and owing to what I've heard with my own ears at some auditions outside the door) it probably isn't that far off. I once went to a program where a rather misguided young student was performing some very heavy dramatic mezzo rep along with Cherubino and the high Mozart pants roles, because her teacher had lead her to believe that was what was appropriate for her age. There is a LOT of bad teaching out there, more so than good I think. It's important to be specific because there are a lot of people that lack the common sense to realize Cindy's suggestions might apply to them.
I don't have a problem with her bluntness at all. In fact, if you do, you're in for a rude awakening for this business. We work in a career field overpopulated with egomaniacal people filled with insecurities that they manifest by taking it out on others. What she said was downright polite compared to what I have heard from some directors and conductors over the years. Get a thicker skin, because if this bothers you, this might not be the career path for you.
