Once I was a regional met finals concert, where a young contralto was singing, who was clearly not even close to the level that is needed for the national finals. However, she had a very beautiful voice, great timbre, and obviously a lot of potential. She got an encouragement award. That tells me: If your potential really shows, you are very well prepared, and don't sing rep that's not appropriate for you, go for it!
