IF, and it's a big IFFFFF, you're actually ready to sing some lighter wagner rep and you do it to a VERY high level, you may get away with this, but know that you'll be creating a disadvantage for yourself. AND, not all wagner is created equal. Many young baritones and bass-baritones who are semi-secure in their secondo passagio will sing "O du mein holder" which is WAY different from "Leb Wohl" or "Wehvolles Erbe." A 22 year old with the first would simply make me want to hear how they're negotiating the chromatic lines through their passagio...if he lists the other 2, he's gotta do a lot more to convince me he's not an idiot or at least studying with one.
And that brings us to the real question: IS your teacher having you sing this stuff because he doesn't know how to teach and would rather let you wail away than attempt to building some real solid technique. To be honest, if you were a 22 year old who could REALLY sing this rep, I think the powers that be would be so desperate to nurture you that they would've scooped you up by now. Maybe you're slogging away in a remote school and haven't had the exposure yet, but understand the odds are against it.
If you want an honest and brutal opinion BEFORE having a bad experience at MONCA, make a CD of your wagner arias and send them along with a letter to Evelyn Lear at the Wagner Society in DC. They do a LOT to help young singers who really sing this stuff and would also have the expertise to listen to your CD and give you an honest assessment of whether you're ready to be studying this kind of thing now. She and her assistant both do a lot of judging at the wagner competitions around the country and would likely have a finger on the pulse of what's getting hired and what's expected in that rep. She also comes from an old-school style of learning and singing that wouldn't immediately flinch at a 22 year old singing that rep, but would be the first to tell you if it's not right for you or if you're just not technically ready to approach it yet.
Or if you're REALLY brave(and way more so than I am), you could always post a link here to some of your recordings and ask for honest feedback. While I'm sure there'd be some jackasses and idiots, there would be enough people with good ears who could give you advice. Again, not sure if I'd have the cahones for that, but it would definitely work!
