I'm pretty sure I didn't spend that much. At least I hope not.
BUT I had a free place to stay with people who fed me when I was staying with them. I also had a similar set-up in another town with friends of friends who again wouldn't let me pay for anything (I did buy a cake for Kaffee und Kuchen once but that was about it.) You can eat cheaply in Germany IF you don't go to sit down restaurants for dinner. That's gonna cost you so you can't do that very often.
