Warnings about NEC studio teachers?July 1 2009 at 3:28 PM | Anonymous (Login anothersoprano22) NFCS Member |
| Several people I have talked to have warned me that NEC voice students often leave with major technical problems. I hate to be negative, but does anyone know which studio teachers are causing them/which teachers to avoid? |

Well that statement is somewhat of an overgeneralization, but has some validity. I do not feel comfortable advising on one studio over the other, but I do feel that there are certain voice faculty there that are more qualified than others. I hear a lot of good things coming from NEC's two newest teachers, Karen Holvik and Michael Meraw, as well as Vinson Cole, although he works mostly with grads. |

He's a fantastic teacher. He'll meet you where you're at, and listen to your own aspirations as well as guide in the direction of a good vocal technique that you can take with you to any repertoire.
Michael is honest and fair. He has high standards, but with the ears and pedagogy to support them.

Though I can't vouch for him as a teach, I can certainly vouch for him as a colleague and singer. He and I worked together both in school (many moons ago) and professionally (slighter fewer moons ago.) A technically sound, intelligent, cerebral, kind, and generous man all around. He was a baritone, a counter tenor, and then a baritone again, so he certainly know his technical crap!
