So there I was, massaging my foot with a golf ball....

... by standing on one leg, and gently yet somewhat firmly rolling my other foot back and forth on the golf ball (suggested by my physiotherapist... really freeing for leg muscles and solar plexus, I might add). I think I took it one step too far because now, my big toe joint feels like I dropped a chair on it, then stubbed in the doorway, and shots of pain keep jolting through. Ou ou ouuuuchh!!

I know this pain. Several years back I had it out of the blue, and went to doctor after doctor. All of them just told me, well, you have arthritis in your feet. I KNOW that! Tell me something I don't know. Tell me why, all of a sudden, my toe joint hurts like hell!!

Well, now I think I know why. It was obviously some nerve I hit or pinched or something. Ya think? I am lucky to have experienced this before, and to know that, one day, it will simply go away. I will walk again!!

But does anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of the pain NOW?!?!?!

Foot specialists, anyone??

thanks... g-phone. ouch.

... when in walked a Rabbi, a Sufi mystic, and a plumber.

November 5 2009, 9:02 PM

Wait, this WASN'T a vaudeville routine?
Dang.
I always get those mixed up.

Seriously, this is NO fun!
I'm lucky so far [::: knocks wooden tenor-head :::] to have avoided any contact with Mr. Arthur Itis, but I know that joints and bones and stuff will inevitably erode and lessen their elasticity and all that.

I am NOT in any way a foot-specialist.
That being said, were I in your position, I'd definitely do my share of either hot showers or letting said foot soak for about an hour or so per day in some sort of big pot/pan/whatever will hold enough water to allow soakage, AND be gentle with myself and the foot until it calms down, because it sure sounds like it is HELLA annoyed right now.

Ow.

I feel yur pain.

TV, you crack me up!!

Definitely find some voltaren gel if you can...

Also, resting the foot on a hot water bottle might help too..

Waiting to see what the plumber really said!

Voltaren... meet Zerbinetta!

November 8 2009, 4:57 PM

When i had to wear too high heels for Zerbinetta, I gave my feet a rubdown in Voltaren before putting on my costume.
Sneaky trick.

Alas, this is my fate. As I am now having screwy back issues, and have luckily found a god of an osteopath here in Krefeld of all places!!!)..... I don't even know how I was going to finish that sentence.

Those of you without pain, BE GLAD!!

peace, out.

How about hot parrafin baths?

November 5 2009, 10:33 PM

I think I remember our cousin with rheumatoid arthritis using hot wax baths. Something like this (got off a google --Use Wax Heat and Cold and Wax Therapy):

Wax

Few things warm and soothe aching hands as thoroughly as a dip in hot wax. Paraffin treatments are a popular offering from physiotherapists, but you can also treat yourself at home. You don't really need a special machine to try this treatment. Here are directions that you can follow:

Materials: 3 packages paraffin wax, available in grocery stores. Tall pot, pint of mineral oil, plastic bags big enough to fit over your hand, towel (warmed, preferably).

Melt enough paraffin in the pot to fill it about halfway.

Add mineral oil until the pot is three-quarters full. Stir well.

Remove pot from heat and let cool until a light skin forms over the paraffin. Test the temperature.

Valtaren Gel

November 6 2009, 6:02 AM

When I was first diagnosed with arthritis and my hands were the worst, I went to physiotherapy and they would dip my hands in wax. The best feeling in the world. Then, they would wrap them in plastic bags and towels to keep the heat in. I can't remember the time, maybe it was 10 minutes.

Epsom salt also works a lot.

I also use Valtaren (Voltoren) gel to reduce inflammation when I really can't function. It is quite cheap. It used to be a prescription gel but, if we can get it over the counter in Canada, I am sure you can purchase it in Germany (I think tha is where you are). Canada is always last to approve these things.
