Job Ideas?

So I'm quitting my teaching job to focus on singing more. I don't want to teach, as it is exhausting on the voice/body. I've been basically looking for admin asst/receptionist stuff on craigslist, and also browsing websites of different NYC colleges for the same sort of positions available.

However, I was wondering of other ideas of jobs that I could get... I think I'm starting to "settle" looking for admin asst positions, but don't want to narrow my options because I don't know what they are! I'm also looking to make a min. of 30-35K plus benefits... I hope that's not too idealistic happy.gif

So... other suggestions to look for?

not having any idea what you are qualified to do...

June 27 2009, 3:18 PM

...would make it quite difficult to tell you what sorts of jobs you should seek. What are you qualified to do? What sort of experience do you have? Are you a certified EMT? A serious math wiz? Do you have a license to drive commercial vehicles? Have you been trained as a pastry chef? I ask these questions in jest, but if YOU don't have any idea of what sorts of jobs would work for you, how can we?

I guess what I'm saying is, figure out what special skills you have, or what special skills you would like to develop and go for those jobs. I'm not sure that anyone but you can figure that out.

Whoops

June 27 2009, 5:25 PM

should have clarified further!

i mentioned i was a music teacher... so that's my biggest skill, although i'm not looking to go into teaching again (at least not now.) i've done temp/office work in the past (like 2 years ago.) i was the grill girl/student manager at my college cafe for 4 years, and waitressed with bennigan's chains on-and-off for a few years.

i guess i don't feel like i have many additional "special" skills that would qualify me for anything more than office assistant positions, but i wasn't sure if that's because i'm not thinking outside the box! i have no background in anything like medicine or finance (and a lot of things i'm seeing are in just that latter field!) i like dealing with people and am a pretty quick learner. i wouldn't mind getting trained, but am not sure what fields, other than admin assistant or whatever, would train me, especially given my salary req's.

i guess i'm jsut curious as to what other singers in nyc do for work while trying to make it as a singer. i'm thinking many singers on the forum might have solely performance degrees, and i'm wondering what can be done for work in general (just looking for a scope of ideas, really!) i had a double degree in perf. and ed. and i went straight into education and now that i'm looking to get out of it, i don't know what other avenues to even explore!

i know this is a little vague, i'm just trying to get an idea of what other singers do for day jobs, especially if one just has a specialized [performance] degree happy.gif

Training...

of course many jobs will want you to have an HR background, but corporate training would utilize your skills, and they tend to like "creative thinkers" . Now depending on what you are doing specifically it could be really demanding, but your schedule itself might be flexible. By flexible, I mean you work a 12 hour day so you can have a 6 hour day...that sort of thing. Check out consulting companies, and I'd say go to an employment agency. Tell them what you are looking for, but DO NOT mention the singing as what you quit your job for. They don't need to know that, and it could hurt you in the beginning stages.
