Does anyone know of anybody that can coach me on Swedish for some Sibelius songs in the Los Angeles area?

funny. but seriously...

You could try the Swedish Consulate in LA. I'm sure they could point you in the right direction.

Otherwise see if you can find a language school that teaches Swedish or a College/University language department that offers Svensk.

If I was down there, I'd be happy to help you, but from where I am, this is the best I can do for you.

Just out of curiosity, which songs are you planning on doing?

Lykke til!

I never thought of the consulate. My school doesn't have a Swedish department. Boo on them. The songs I'm doing are; Den första kyssen, Flickan kom ifrån sin älsklings möte, Svarta rosor, Var det en dröm, and Våren flyktar hastigt.

nice choices

Your best bet in recordings/language perfection are Anne Sophie von Otter and Karita Matila. Both are native Swedish speakers, and Karita, being Finnish, will be more familiar with the Swedish that Sibelius actually spoke (since he was raised an aristocrat in Finland). Also, both have excellent recordings of Sibelius songs. And, since the songs you have chosen are probably some of the most performed/well known by Sibelius, I'm positive they've recorded them.

Hope that helps!

ps. Since you're doing "Flickan kom ifrån sin älsklings möte," you should see if you can find Stenhammar's version of it. It's a great song too, and the text is the same, so it's an easy addition once you've learned Sibelius'.

I've got a CD with Karita doing them all. Thank goodness I've got that in the meantime.

You want someone who knows about singing diction

because it's different than how Swedish is spoken.

Also there are two dialects.

I had a learn swedish CD-ROM that alternated between eastern and western pronunciation. Ufdah!
