Tenebrae is a London-based professional chamber choir, founded and directed by Nigel Short. Its concerts, often performed by candlelight, create an atmosphere of spiritual and musical reflection, where medieval chant and renaissance works are interspersed with more contemporary music. The choir utilizes the acoustic and character of the performance space to enable the audience to experience the full power and intimacy of the human voice.

Tenebrae's carefully selected singers are drawn from such hallowed musical backgrounds as King's College Cambridge, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, St. Paul's Cathedral, The Royal Opera House Covent Garden and English National Opera, to create a unique vocal mix with an extraordinary range of vocal power and color. The choir was born out of Nigel Short's desire to bring together what he loved best in his own singing careerthe passionate sounds of large Cathedral choirs and the precision of ensembles like The Kings Singersto create a new kind of choral group.
