when my church started to have God and Country day the Sunday before July 4. Patriotism and faith do not and should not go hand in hand. One does not need the other. And that comment about Obama, "I haven't seen any patriotism from him yet." That says it all.

I always have had to shake my head in utter amazement at how this country has morphed into a giant, bloviating mass of protoplasmic idiocy that has completely lost sight of the fact that our Founding Fathers.....
(.... wait for it.......)
Were NOT 'Christians'.
Not in ANY sense of the word.
They were 18th Century Deists - you can look it up.
In fact, you probably SHOULD.
I have a feeling that just about 100% of them, were they able to be brought back to see what their brave experiment hath wrought, would be in favor of pretty much wiping the slate clean and starting all over again.
there's nothing wrong with loving god and country.
What I found odd even when it was starting in my church in the 80s was what seemed to be applying G-d's promises to Israel to the United States. What's more scary is that this idea is from the Christian Identity Movement. Very scary stuff. Not that the people it has trickled down to know where it came from (most of them anyway) but that doesn't make it any less bizarre).

1. Christianity was "founded" many hundred years before the dawn of Western Enlightenment political philosophy. There is as much Jesus in the founding documents of the US and there is Jesus in the Easter bunny.
2. Even if (with a modern, Western mind) you were to argue that the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament Writings seem to share philosophic principles with the founding documents of the United States, it is still a false dichotomy. Puerto Ricans and Mexicans both speak Spanish, but Puerto Ricans have very, very, very, very, very little -- if anything -- in common with Mexicans.
3. Even IF one were to concede (because one were under the influence of strong drugs) that Christian principles (whatever those are) were the same as those found in the founding documents of the US, then it stands to reason that someone could be a "Christian," or "saved," simply by being a good American. That means: (1) America is a religion, (2) one could be religious without G-d or Jesus, (3) one could be "saved" without Jesus, (4) the Church and the "Kingdom of G-d" is the same as America, etc., etc., etc. And ALL of that is apostasy and heresy.
The men (I believe they are men) who are promulgating these ideas among the ignorant multitudes are doing it purposefully for the purpose of building an army of socially-controlled drones that follow on command. They've done a great job of it already.
Had Sam Harris been a sociologist or anthropologist, he would've gotten it right.
I'll post more, for my own amusement, a little later.
There is nothing in the Bible about Democracy or Representative Democracy. There are some attempts by early Christians at something akin to communism but there's nothing about capitalism (in fact, there are restrictions on lending money at interest and I'm pretty sure that 35% interest is a mortal sin but I'm no expert).
Nothing of the American experiment had any basis in the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. I don't suppose it contradicts any of them either but that's not where it came from.
Heresy? Maybe. I think it's just ignorance both of where their religion comes from and the history of political ideas and of the American colonies and later the United States.
Not that this is going to convince anyone who believes this crap.

As much as the Christians are trying their damn'dest - eh, I mean darn'dest - to save their religion from sinking in our world today, they are going about it from every wrong angle. Just stick to the basics, dudes, which is a pretty good deal. Don't murder, don't lie, love thy neighbor, etc... That's good shit!! You're tryin' too hard!
