Just got 85 CR 500

by (Login Hardison124)

I just picked up an 85 CR 500 for only 400.00 bucks. The bike is in great shape and only needs a little T.L.C. Thanks to this website, I can now easily start the bad boy. I like haulin' ass in the deserts of So-Cal. I,ve ridden all my life and the last bike I had was a XR 650 mod. I,ve ridden smaller 2-strokes but not a 500.I can't wait to get this monster out! I'll be sure to respect this famous and beautiful bike. What can I expect from the powerband on the way out to the Slash X ?

brutal power everywhere....

by (Login fatguyzinc)

i to have an 85 that i gotta sell (car wreck put me outta commision) and these are the best period. yeah yeah yeah i know the dont stop or turn like a 250, but the roost you shovel at em when you get a straight makes it worth wrestling that big b*stard around the turns. try a pro circuit pipe & muffler, a sudco pwk 39.5 carb ( factory for the kx500) and a set of 14/49 gears ( 13/51 is stock) with a moto tassinari vforce reed cage and hang the hell on!!!!!

how to start a cold cr500r everytime....

by (Login fatguyzinc)

step 1: find a shoe-trust me on this one. step 2: lean bike over hard to the left around 45 degrees with throttle open 1/2 to 3/4 of the way, till gas dribbles out on the ground. step 3: put bike in second, let clutch out and rock bike back and forth hard with throttle open 1/2 of the way. step 4: with bike back in neutral, use bottom 1/4 only of kickstarter slowly till you hear the "fear rattle". step 5: up all the way on kick starter, slowly down 2 clicks, then back up to top and kick the living hell outta it as hard as you can, with the throttle cracked 1/8 open. step 6: repeat steps 4-6 again if neccesary. she should light up in 2-4 kicks when cold, 1-2 kicks hot. i have never found a more foolproof way of lighting one of these monsters up than this- and i was riding them for 22 years. it works on my 85, my brothers 91, my 95, and my friend todds 97.

further corrosion

by (Login luftcraftcr)

I feel your pain, just purchased a 1987 CR500, had a water leak from the pump wheep hole. pulled the cover to change seals and extensive corrosion exists in the case around the water pump area. Service Honda has a case avail for 147.00. I'm assuming this was the original case. I will look for anti-freeze with a corrosion inhibitor or an additive.

corrosion

by (Login djwi)

More than likely you are experiencing galvanic corrosion which is caused by the use of dissimilar metals. This is based on the Galvanic series relationships which indicates how certain metals are more likely to corrode than others. One metal becomes the anode and corrodes faster than it would all by itself, while the other becomes the cathode and corrodes slower than it would alone. For galvanic corrosion to occur, three conditions must be present:

Electrochemically dissimilar metals must be present;
These metals must be in electrical contact; and
The metals must be exposed to an electrolyte.

Your electrolyte is your antifreeze. You may now be asking where is the electrical current that is required coming from? Well it is generated via static source. (piston sliding in bore, magneto) when your electrolyte becomes electrically charged the weakest metals exposed to it begin to dissolve. What dissolves easier than most metals? Magnesium and aluminum are two big ones along with zinc which generally is utilized in boat cooling systems. The least likely? Gold. Hence why airbag connections are coated in gold plating. One way to test if this is occurring in your bike is with a volt meter. Set the volt meter on DC an measure the voltage. If you see greater than .3 volts you are causing irreversible damage. Place the ground lead on the frame and the positive lead in the fluid. This is a standard test for automotive/truck brake fluid, coolant etc. Should check your car also fluid also, pitted brake cylinders come from this. You can change the fluid and also try some corrosion inhibitors made for diesel vehicles as they have excessive static due to high compression ratios. The long life anti-freezes may also add greater benefits as they are designed to last up to 150k miles or five years. Be cautious with the Dex Cool and only utilize distilled water so as not to create hydrochloric acid in the cooling system. (contamination) As rule you should only use distilled water in all battery and cooling systems since minerals in the water can be conductive and cause other issues. Hope this helps.

87 cr 500 trouble

by Hardison124 (Login Hardison124)

Stick with stock jetting. Determine fuel or electrical. Check all contacts for corrosion. Will bike idle? Be sure all passages in carb are clear with PJ1 and compressed air. Be sure your plug, coil and wire are o.k. Is this intermitent or does this happen every time you slow roll the throttle until powerband? Bike is made to gas and clutch like you just stole it. dont poke around.

Im going to order a 162 main jet. In my manual theres a conversion chart for altitude and temp that i never looked at because i did not know what is was but i noticed it was for jetting and it gave me 162 so im going to try that.

Your main jet has nothing to do with anything but full throttle!!! Idle to 1/4 throttle=pilot ,1/4 3/4 throttle needle, full throttle= main
