Off-the-beaten-path Masters Programs

I have a student who is looking for smaller, lesser known MM programs at schools that will be less expensive and where she will get lots of attention within a day's drive of Boston. We have a good list of all the big schools in the area, but please let me know if you are aware of programs at state schools in the region that might have something good to offer.

Thanks.

something to explore

SUNY Potsdam - fairly large music school, fairly small grad program, would probably get lots of attention there. I have a friend on music ed faculty there who thinks highly of the voice faculty, but I don't know first hand. Several hours drive from either Boston or NYC.

Univ. of Connecticut in Storrs, sort of a medium-sized music program in a state university. They have had some outstanding faculty in music but don't have the profile of the big conservatories and Ivy League Uni's that they are near. Not far from NYC and Boston.

Univ. of Mass. in Amherst. An interesting area in that there used to be a sort of consortium of colleges in that area where you could take classes at more than one school. Easy proximity to NYC and Boston, but not a big city feel at all.

I have heard some nice things about Wesleyan in Connecticut but I don't know whether they offer master's degrees.

All four of these would qualify as "off the beaten path" for a singer in the northeast, but I don't know about current vocal faculty conditions there. These schools should be quite responsive to your inquiries, however. I looked into a couple of these myself many years ago when I lived up there.

Wow, thanks for the suggestions.

I know someone who teaches at UConn, so that's good, and Potsdam was already on my radar. But the others I hadn't considered. Thank you!
