I realize that this is an ignorant question, but...
What exactly differentiates a "b" house from a "c" house? Examples?

Budget.

As determined by Musical America, I believe. I don't remember what the delineations are, but it's all about the green.

All about the budget

And it's no reflection on quality, just the TOTAL budget.

Also, we talk about A, B and C but the categories that Opera America uses are I, II, II, IV and V. But I think the letters have stuck.

I didn't find it on the OA website...

It actually came from a union local website that seems to have removed it. (Perhaps at the insistence of OA, I don't know.)

Luckily I saved a copy...

Go to http://www.usa829.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=58&Itemid=203
Scroll down to "opera" and click on "OPERA America company members."

It's the same website that Dr Snider posted, but it looks like they disabled the direct link to the PDF file.

Companies by Level

May 21 2008, 1:32 PM

OPERA America determines their company levels based on operating budget.

Level I over $10 mil
Level II $3-$10 mil
Level III $1-$3 mil
Level IV under $1 mil

The list within each level changes annually. If you'd like to e-mail me, I can send you a pdf that lists them as of July 2007.
