I know about CCM. I am curious about where people live. How much should I expect to pay for rent? Church jobs? temple jobs? Anything else I should know but am too dumb to think to ask? ha
Thanks for the help. I have never made a move like this without already knowing someone where I am going.
the gaslight district (near the intersection of martin luther king @ clifton avenue) is very popular with ccm students. very bohemian with coffee shops, skyline, movie theater, and graeters . . . a growing number of students are living in liberty hill (conveniently located immediately north of downtown) . . . an affordable neighborhood undergoing some gentrification although there are some shady spots between ccm and liberty hill . . . and many students like to live immediately east of campus, although i always thought the apartments there were often a little dilapidated . . . but walking approximately five minutes to reach campus is a pretty fantastic perk. rent is soooooo affordable in cincinnati; with one or two roommates (or maybe a studio), you could easily find something between $300-400/month . . .
temple jobs are almost impossible to get . . . i had sung hhd services for about three years before moving there, and the best i ever got was a few opportunities to sub for sabbath services . . . but almost anyone can find a church job . . . send emails now to any faculty you know well enough to ask for suggestions on churches looking to fill positions, or wait until you get to ccm (church jobs are usually posted in the fall) . . .
I lived there for a few years while doing grad school. The entire city is basically set up as small neighborhoods, each with it's own charm, residents and socio-economic status (or lack thereof). Many students live in Corryville, which is the area surrounding the University. It's about 5 minutes north of downtown, so the location is good and rent is dirt cheap especially if you have roommates. Crime is high there. I know more than a few people who have been mugged while walking to class or have had break-ins. Clifton gaslight is also a popular place and is safer, but rent is more expensive. Those are really your two best choices if you choose to live within walking distance, Clifton being the better choice IMO.
The better neighborhoods are farther out. Hyde Park (where I lived) is a few miles northeast of UC and is a mix of young couples, students and white yuppies. The restaurants and stores are classier and there is very little crime. Rentals are easy to find there and you'll pay similar prices as Clifton gaslight. The downside is you'll have to drive or take the bus. I paid $500/month for a large studio with a great sunroom there. Also consider O'Brienville and Mt. Lookout, two other "hip" neighborhoods surrounding Hyde Park.
Church jobs are usually posted in the fall when school starts, just keep your eye out for them--there are plenty. Shoot me an email if you want more help finding a place.
I have to find an apartment. been looking at sites on line and also craigslist. I will go in July to look at places. Anything I need to know? It has to be easier than New York. ha
