To bin, or not to bin, that is the question.

Rex, as is so often the case, is in tune with a majority of people with his Diary comments on wheelie bins. However, much worse could follow if the government is to meet European targets on recycling. At present, we are well behind some European countries in meeting recycling targets mainly because we only have one bin for all recyclable waste. That means that our recycled waste is mixed up and is, therefore, classified as low quality. That is why so much of it ends up in landfill. I believe that, in Germany, households have as many as five different bins for different kinds of waste and I read in the paper, a few weeks ago, that our government is considering introducing a similar system. If that is the case, a huge amount of our money will be spent supplying each household with another three bins. The present two-bin system cost over £2.5M in the South Kesteven area. Therefore, three extra bins, having taken inflation into consideration, will probably cost us another £5M. Still, it's only ratepayers' money, isn't it?
