Response to Making work

A very good idea actually. There's nothing around Bourne at the moment work wise and less for those of us going off to University in September. Those places with vacancies won't employ you because of either or both of the following.

a) You would only be a temporary worker/only be able to work limited times
b) We're considered less reliable.

I used to work 14 hours a week on the Sainsbury's checkouts and only received £4.37 an hour. It was £3.50 when I was working at Georges. You either can't find work around Bourne, or when you do, they exploit you for overtime.
Also, I'm pretty certain I'd have been made redundant before I turned 18 - as, then they need to pay you more. With the recession, student workers are the first to go!

The problems would probably come with insurance, tax and so forth. There'd no doubt be a whole load of fuss about workplace training. I received 15 hours training just to sit on a till, so any manual work would probably require a lot more, just to complicate things (Apparently, it's not feasible to rely on commmon sense!).

However, maybe recruiting work experience students from the schools would be an idea? I've seen 15 and 16 year olds helping to cut down trees, mow grass etc. near Warners this week. They seemed to be enjoying themselves and the weather. Duke of Edinburgh students as well need to do some form of charitable task.
