As far as I know different regulations apply in different German Länder, as in the Provinces of the Netherlands.

But I have seen examples in both countries of sorting boxes - plastics are sorted into a multi-compartment box according to the resin codes moulded in (have a look at a few plastic items - you will find a recycling triangle with a number or a letter code (PP, PET, PS) inside).

These sorted boxes get put out on the doorstep, and a chap with a van or an electric trolley comes and empties them into different slots, often with a shredder or compactor immediately inside.

In Groningen these boxes go outside at least twice a week, and in Jever I have been told they can go out any day of the week and will be dealt with.

It seems to be common for young children to be given the job of washing and sorting the plastics in many households.
