It was news to me that Karl Malden had passed away. I looked on the BBC and Telegraph websites last night at 6.00pm and then this lunch time and there was no headline mention - only of Mollie Sugden. Malden was particularly good in 'One Eyed Jacks', and I also have the recording of him as the barkeep in 'The Gunfighter' with Greg Peck.
Two others who have passed away this year that, like Malden, appeared in westerns were Phil Carey and James Whitmore. Only in the last three years have I become interested in the western genre, particularly of the 40s and 50s and, perhaps not surprisingly, find that almost none of the stars remain alive.
On a happier note I thought I'd list some of those screen stars still with us who are now 90 or over:
Kevin Mc Carthy
Norman Wisdom
Harry Morgan
Eli Wallach
Olivia de Havilland
Kirk Douglas
Ernest Borgnine
R.G. Armstrong
Herbert Lom
Joan Fontaine
John Forsythe
Jennifer Jones
Gene Barry
and our near neighbour Richard Todd.
