When I was at teacher training college, way back in the mid 1970's, we were told by the lecturers that it was bad practise to criticise pupils for their spelling in case it stifled their expression. Most of us thought the lecturers who propagated this nonsense were brainwashed lunatics, but we had to pretend to go along with it or our assessments would suffer. I dread to think how much damage must have been done by those who were taken in by it and followed the "party line". |
