Dear folks in the Ijusha community,
This is an important request from the New Japanese Canadian Association (NJCA).
The NJCA has been recognizing the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) as the centre of the JC community and, since Wynford days, we did the activities at the JCCC and worked together for many years.
We used to have a dedicated activity space at the 2nd floor of the JCCC. Since the end of the recent renovation at the 2nd floor, the space disappeared. Since April, the NJCA and JCCC had a number of meetings to resolve this situation. However, we still do not see any resolution.
The major reason of this problem is the financial difficulties at the JCCC. However, there is another aspect. The JCCC feels that the Ijushas are not supporting the JCCC enough financially. The JCCC mentioned twice "Ijushas are refusing to be JCCC members". This reflects the JCCC's view of the Ijushas.
The NJCA strongly feels that it is a huge misunderstanding. The NJCA believes that a large number of Ijusha are proud of the JCCC, are recognizing it as the centre of the JC community and are supporting the JCCC as the JCCC members.
The NJCA Board decided in the last Friday meeting to prove this point. In order to do that, it is essential to have your help.
The NJCA requests your help as follows:
[] People who are already the JCCC members, please forward the following information to Nobby Miura.
(1) Full Name (2) JCCC membership number (if you know)
(3) Family membership or Individual membership
[] People who are not JCCC members at present but like to be a JCCC member in this occasion, please forward the following information to Nobby Miura
(1) Full Name (2) Indicate that you are applying
(3) Family membership or Individual membership
* JCCC membership application form is at the site below. http://www.jccc.on.ca/about/jccc_membership_application.pdf
[] Send the information to: Nobby Miura nobbycosmic@yahoo.co.jp
Once the renovation of the 2nd floor is complete, the negotiation for a space becomes extremely difficult. This is the time to act. We request your maximum help and support.
We are having 2 Pub nights this month. One is the regular pub night and other one is a HALLOWEEN pub night!! Please feel free to bring your all friends to the pub nights!!
------------------------------------------------------ Lecture by Akira Yamaguchi: Noh Theatre Costume PowerPoint presentation with fabric sample display [ in English ]
Thursday, October 2, 6:30 pm Textile Museum of Canada Auditorium 55 Centre Avenue, Toronto (Dundas St. W & University Ave., St. Patrick subway)
Although Japanese Noh theatre is characterized by its highly abstract expressions, the costumes used in Noh, called shozoku, or robes, are extremely intricate. Akira Yamaguchi, President of the Noh Costume Institute, Kyoto, Japan, will illustrate the details of donning the robes and the techniques behind their creation such as weaving, dyeing and embroidery. Noh theatre costumes contain multiple meanings, and reveal the myths of mortals and spirits of Japan.
Akira Yamaguchi Born in 1948 in Kyoto, a scholar of Noh theatre costumes, and curator of Noh Bibliographic Source Gallery 1985 Established Yamaguchi Noh Costume Institute 1972 -1989 Researched Noh costumes of Edo Period, 1000 patterns 1993 Recreated Noh costumes in the possession of Chusonji Temple 1993 Circuit exhibitions of splendid costumes in Japan Circuit exhibitions in Europe, US and others 1994 Recreated Noh costumes of Momoyama and Edo periods, 300 patterns 2004 Received an award from the Minister of Japanese Foreign Affairs for his achievement in international cultural exchange.

The Japan Foundation, Toronto and JUN/KEN ARTS Collective present the contemporary woodblock print exhibition, water/wood/paper: Mokuhanga, October 3 - November 15, 2008 at The Japan Foundation, Toronto.
Mokuhanga is the Japanese word for woodblock printing. Although employing the simplest of materials, wood, water-based pigments and paper, mokuhanga is a sophisticated medium requiring focus and discipline. The exhibition's international participants together with their teacher, Akira Kurosaki of Kyoto have seized the challenges inherent in the medium to unlock its range and potential through imaginative personal vision within a contemporary approach.
The exhibition intends to demonstrate both rigorous and exploratory handling of this water-based woodblock medium within a variety of thematic or conceptual approaches. The exhibition will also examine the early roots of Japanese woodblock in an historical mini-exhibition. Authentic prints from 18th & 19th century artists will explore the underpinnings of contemporary mokuhanga.

Nihongo Art Contest 2008 is a unique exhibition of artwork by children using art to help them learn the Japanese language. The juried exhibition includes almost 200 drawings, from the whimsical to the sublime, by children across Ontario in grades 1 to 12 currently studying the Japanese language. Some work by kindergarten students and adults will also be showcased.
The Nihongo Art Contest was founded in 2004 by Yukie Uchida, a teacher of Japanese language at Hillfield Strathallan College in Hamilton. She invented a unique method of teaching by encouraging students to draw pictures that incorporated Japanese characters to embody a word's meaning in the drawing itself.
This year's participating students are from:
Hillfield Strathallan College, Kokugo Kyoshitsu, The Giles School, Nisshu Gakuin, St. Louis ALC. Nikka Gakuen, The Toronto Japanese Language School, YRDSB International Language Program, Georges Vanier Night School, and private tutoring.
Supported by:
Gendai Gallery, Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, Bits Magazine, Nisshu Gakuin, Nikka Gakuen, The Giles School, Kokugo Kyoshitsu, The Consulate-General of Japan in Toronto & The Japan Foundation, Toronto
This event is part of the celebration of the 80th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Canada.
