This is in response to Heavenstearz earlier question about hair.
I'm not much good at hair either. Before you start drawing hair, you have to consider the structure of that particular hairstyle you want to achieve. Don't think of hair as an unruly mass of ... stuff. Good hair is always layered, parted, or otherwise structured.
When designing your hairstyle, it helps to print out a copy of your bald-headed base doll: you can then trace over various hairstyles using butterpaper or tracing paper. Its good to have some references at this stage: either fashion zine photos or even better, pictures of anime/manga/comics where the hair structure is very well defined (garage kit photos are also particularly great for structure).
Begin drawing your hair in sections, separating the fringe from the back areas. This is useful later on if you plan to separate your hair into different layers. You can then have headbands that go underneath the fringe etc. If possible, try to make the fringe style independent of the styles for the back of the hair. This allows for very effective permutations of hairstyles later on. Look at dolls by Vanessie (Thandie Porter) and Her Mad Hatterness (particularly Blue Chan) for examples where this is used to good effect.
Finally, hair colour and styles can go a long way to give your Kiss doll that much needed personality. Make sure that the hairstyle is in character with your doll. A punk chick will have very different hair from a schoolgirl type vs an alien type... don't be afraid to experiment, the wilder/more unique, the more your doll will stand out from the crowd.
